Casa Isabel La Católica | GRX Arquitectos

The Isabel la Católica nº2 building corresponds to a little-known collective housing project in Granada by José Mª García de Paredes (1924-1990), but it also maintains the features that characterize the work of this architect. Respect for the work of García de Paredes makes us pay attention to his thought and drawing when trying to solve the initial premise of the work: to convert a 240 m² noble house from the mid-20th century into two independent homes with domestic patterns of contemporary families.

According to Ángela García de Paredes, his father was determined to create a modular and homogeneous system that would solve complex needs in different places. In this context, it is possible to understand that when García de Paredes built the Almendrales church (1961-1964), he was not betraying the principles of modern language, but rather demonstrating a criticism of the limits of this current, demanding greater freedom. Following this approach, we have several vertical planes conceived from a 10 × 10 cm Cartesian Grid capable of expanding and contracting according to domestic needs. It is a homogeneous mesh that adapts, like a living organism, to give shape to elements of the house, such as a hatch, a fireplace, a cupboard, a mirror or a bench, while establishing a filter between the different rooms. All the materials used trace the movement that corresponds to them, whether ceramic or stone, glass or metal. They are two houses that want to redraw the modern architect to meet contemporary needs.

The result of the restructuring process is two autonomous homes: one facing south, brighter and warmer, whose scope corresponds to the original common spaces and service area, and where the existing facilities are used so that a single curve is capable of catalyze all the uses and actions of the house. On the opposite side, the area occupied by the North house corresponds to the primitive private bedroom spaces, in addition to the main distributor which, after the intervention, adopts the plasticity necessary to absorb irregularities in the floor plan.

Regarding the project, the jury highlights that with the use of a timeless and standard 10x10cm piece, the entire program of the home is articulated, adapting to the plasticity of the house. The same material generates movement and has the versatility to adapt to all types of surfaces, even curves. In addition, the careful work in choosing the color range of the entire project is valued.

El edificio Isabel la Católica nº2 corresponde a un proyecto, poco conocido, de vivienda colectiva en Granada de José Mª García de Paredes (1924-1990), pero igualmente mantiene los rasgos que caracterizan el trabajo de este arquitecto. El respeto por la obra de García de Paredes nos hace atender a su pensamiento y su dibujo al tratar de resolver la premisa inicial del trabajo: convertir una casa noble de mediados del siglo XX con 240 m² en dos viviendas independientes con patrones domésticos de familias contemporáneas.

Según narra Ángela García de Paredes, su padre estaba decidido a crear un sistema modular y homogéneo que resolviera necesidades complejas en lugares diversos. En este contexto, es posible entender que cuando García de Paredes construyó la Iglesia de Almendrales (1961-1964), no estaba traicionando los principios del lenguaje moderno, sino evidenciando una crítica a los límites de esta corriente, reclamando mayor libertad. Siguiendo este planteamiento, y con la voluntad de pensar al Maestro, se disponen varios planos verticales concebidos a partir de una retícula cartesiana de 10 × 10 cm. capaz de expandirse y contraerse según las necesidades domésticas. Se trata, pues, de una malla atemporal y homogénea que se adapta, como un organismo vivo, para resolver necesidades contemporáneas y heterogéneas. En su aplicación da forma a elementos propios de la casa, como un pasaplatos, una chimenea, un armario, un espejo o un banco, al mismo tiempo que configura un filtro entre las distintas estancias.

El resultado del proceso de reestructuración son dos viviendas autónomas: una orientada al Sur, más luminosa y caliente, cuyo ámbito se corresponde con los originales espacios comunes y zona de servicio, y donde se aprovechan las instalaciones existentes  para que una sola curva sea capaz de catalizar todos los usos y acciones de la casa. En el lado contrario, el ámbito que ocupa la vivienda Norte se corresponde con los primitivos espacios privados de dormitorios, además del distribuidor principal que, tras la intervención, adopta la plasticidad necesaria para absorber irregularidades de la planta.

ACTA DEL JURADO: “Del proyecto el jurado destaca que con la utilización de una pieza atemporal y estándar de 10x10cm se articula todo el programa de la vivienda adaptándose a la plasticidad de la casa. Un mismo material, genera movimiento y tiene la versatilidad de adaptarse a todo tipo de superficie, incluso las curvas. Además, se pone en valor el cuidado trabajo en la elección de la gama cromática de todo el proyecto”.
