Forest in the City | Yushan Men

Based on  an on-field research in Oregon to study recent timber buildings and mass timber factories, this proposal can be read as a prototypical tower on the Highland park hillside, which requires an innovative approach toward spatial organization to accommodate the living space, as well as the public, communal spaces. 

It takes on a similarity of MVRDV’S Hannover Pavilion, which can be understood as a system of stacking ideal typologies rather than constraining these types within a container. This building packs different types of housing and programs within a series of platforms and containers, varying degrees of privacy and openness is created in multiple layers of living space. 

Deploying the nature of wood, as branching structures, and the tree canopy, as the volumes of mass that produce shade, renders this building as the beginning of a forest in the city. This building is an accumulation of various events, housing typologies, and diverse ways of living. Surrounded by the trees on the hill, this building also becomes a city in the forest.
