On a first approach to site its features seemed very familiar, formed by "socalcos" a kind of staggered landscape traditional to the Portuguese region of Douro vineyards, whose schist walls sharply graze the scenery. It didn't exactly invite construction...

At times we get the feeling that some places would be silent and balanced if we were not to intervene.

Others find their meaning with the intervention itself, and we begin to consider them as pictureframe for an atmosphere, a scenery, a view. It is between these two worlds that, we believe, architects should operate - to know how to complement or complete what God has left undone or unresolved.

This interpretation evokes the poetics and importance of place and placemaking through continuity and tradition but also through evolution.

There is no tradition without evolution, nor evolution without tradition. This perception brings us back to the idea that landscape is valuable and to be respected and safeguarded.

We are interested in this interstice between complement and complete.

Aiming towards contradicting what is evident — that a leopard can't change it's spots but at the same time, to plot an eloquent irony.

We realized that this place invited the use of a new wall to relate and dialogue with the other schist walls that already

resided there. This wall needed almost nothing else, it could very well go on living integrated within the existing topography and over time become a part of the site, but the invitation had been made and we were to design a house there.

As we set the building down, we seeked to reconcile the landscape setting, solar orientation, a 4 bedroom typology, surrounding a patio, privacy and also the geometric figure that delimits the building plan, namely a square, which is not a perfect square.

From this figure, a rotation was created promoting the interstice. That is, perched or thrown over the landscape. This is how the building should be.

It is from this exaltation of the senses that we find a space where man can dream and move forward, perhaps in eloquent irony...

Na visita ao terreno reconhecemos o lugar pelo escalonamento em socalcos, quase similar ao Douro Vinhateiro com os seus muros em Xisto a desenhar vincadamente a paisagem. Parecia que não convidava à construção de um edifício...

Temos sempre a sensação que alguns lugares estariam em silêncio e equilíbrio se não fizéssemos intervenção. Outros, encontram o seu sentido com a própria intervenção passando a olhar para eles enquanto moldura de uma atmosfera, ambiência e paisagem. E entre estes dois mundos que consideramos que os arquitetos devem operar saber complementar ou completar aquilo que Deus deixou por fazer ou resolver.

Esta leitura evoca a poética e a importância do lugar e da construção do mesmo a partir de uma tradição, mas também de uma evolução.

Não há tradição sem evolução, nem evolução sem tradição. Esta perceção remete-nos à noção de paisagem enquanto valor a respeitar e a salvaguardar.

Interessa-nos este interstício entre o complementar e o completar.

Num desígnio de contradição da evidência - estando ali e assim não poderia estar de outra forma... mas por outro lado, fomentar a sensação de uma eloquente ironia.

Assim percebemos que aquele lugar convidava à utilização de um novo muro para se relacionar e dialogar com os outros muros em xisto que ali já residiam. Este muro, quase não necessitava de mais nada, podia viver integrado e com o tempo fazer parte do lugar... , mas o convite estava feito teríamos que projetar uma casa.

Dessa forma, ao pousar o edifício procurou-se entre forças conciliar o enquadramento da paisagem, a orientação solar, a tipologia T4 em pátio, a privacidade e também a figura geométrica que delimita o edifício em planta, designadamente um quadrado, que não é um quadrado perfeito.

A partir desta figura, criou-se uma rotação promovendo o interstício. Isto é, pousado ou lançado sobre a paisagem. Assim deveria estar o edifício.

É desta exaltação dos sentidos que encontramos um espaço onde o homem possa sonhar e avançar, talvez na eloquente ironia...
