Perico Cortés commissioned Sandra Tarruella Interioristas the new Brutus restaurant, located in Plaza Gomila, in the middle of one of the most emblematic neighborhoods of Palma named El Terreno.

Until the 1980s, it was the most glamorous neighborhood in Palma, where renowed artists and writers were seen there regularly, and where locals went out to dine in the restaurants and bars, becoming the most popular nightlife area.

During the last decades the neighborhood suffered deterioration and decay.

Today the GOMILA project is born:

The Fluxà family, owners of Camper, a Majorcan shoe brand, acquired a series of buildings and plots of land around the square and asked the architects GRAS and MVRDV to develop a revitalization project.

In total there are seven buildings with their own chromaticism and identity.

Brutus is an Italian restaurant located in the white colored building. The restaurant, located on the ground floor of one of the buildings has a central terrace.

Its name refers to Brutalism, an architectural movement of the 50s to which we refer to by using exposed concrete structures, rough textures and gray tones.

When we began designing the space, these architectural characteristics helped us as a starting point. We have kept a large amount of the exposed waffle slab structure, concrete walls, columns and floors.

It is a restaurant with a brunch, lunch and dinner service. Most of the kitchen is visible. In the middle of the premises, we located three large counter bars that are used as the bar and both preparation and cooking areas, and converting the restaurant into a dynamic and honest space, where diners can see the preparation of salads, pizzas, and the dishes that they will taste.

The space for diners is configured thanks to 2 large tile rugs that allows to place both round and square shape tables for parties of 2, 4 or 6.  Banquette seating were also provided for large parties.

In addition, we placed a lounge area by the entrance to allow guests to wait for their table to be ready or to have a cocktail after eating.

The interior of the restaurant is connected to the terrace with the use of folding glass walls.

The layout of the terrace is an extension of the interior space. Considering the island's magnificent climate, we landscaped the outdoor space with plants in pots of different heights that are lit up at night to create a very pleasant and magical ambience. The carob tree was chosen as a native tree, it has a robust appearance, strong leaves and sweet fruits.

The wooden furniture of the project is mainly resolved in Ipé and Teak woods. Both tables and banquettes have been custom made. They are bold looking, yet cozy.

We have introduced primary colors used in brutalism, by painting structural beams, the pizza oven, the decorative lamps and the bathrooms.
