A composition in triptych

For this interior design mission, MARDI worked around the concept of the box designed according to a triptych of three interventions.

Indeed, this apartment, located in the heart of the historic city center of Bordeaux, has many qualities, but is closed on itself.

The different spaces are partitioned and do not allow a good circulation of natural light. General aesthetics is defined by a wealth of information which complicates the reading of the project.
Finally, some existing pieces are poorly exploited and make the space even more complex.

Maxime Donnat explains: «Above all, it was a question of restoring the apart- ment’s nobility by allowing it to recover its original DNA, namely: Stone and wooden flooring, two typical materials of Bordeaux historic buildings.

In addition, the provision of natural light and the decompartmentalization of the living space were challenges for give extra space to the volume. »
Concerned about a controlled and well-kept intervention, maison WMARDI designed this project through the carpet- ed drawing. Indeed, each object is thought of as a box placed in the living space. These boxes mark the intervention of the architects.

Yoan Jallerat: «The choice of a light wood for the carpeted interventions responds to the lack of original light. It allows to reflect it while bringing a contemporary note. This writing is accentuated by the addition of a 5x5 tile
that gives a framework and rigour to the project».

The two architects have a dialogue between this light wood and the tiles by adding a touch of color often present in their different projects. Here, the green covers the kitchen work surface, the orange stripes finish the bottom of the inhabited box. They give it more depth while offering a less serious finish.

The wall sconces chosen by MARDI allow the enhancement of this composition

This menued box brings a new dynamic to the project, but is also modular.

Maxime Donnat explains : «Our customers want- ed to create a new night space. However, the size of the project did not allow for an additional bedroom. To overcome this problem while meeting this demand, we have thought of this cube as a modular and scalable space according to the time of day»

Its side closed on the kitchen, offers many closets useful to the kitchen/ entrance area. Its open face to the living room offers a library. A relaxation area allows to enjoy a moment of reading or a discussion open on the living room.

this box, when it is open, energizes the living room by creating depth and pro- posing storage.

An opaque curtain in a hole closes the space. The modular sofa can become a bed.

Once closed, this box will create a new sleeping area in the apartment.

It meets the demand of the owners while remodulating the space.

The interventions, thanks to their scale, materiality and composition, allow, according to a triptych work, to recompose the overall volume of the apartment.
