Urban Cabinet Series (2): The Expanded Columns

Urban Cabinets is a series of domestic renovation projects exploring design strategies around the notion of ‘furniture-architecture’, or ‘furnitecture’. In each of them, a family of ‘furnishings-turned-spaces’ generates domesticities halfway between these two scales. The furniture grows, it becomes XXL and is thought of in architectural terms. Value is placed on custom, hand-made materials and artisanal products from small companies, whose final in-situ execution will create a dialogue between the different trades in each field.

The second project in the series is the renovation of an open-block housing unit from the fiftties in the central Madrid neighbourhood of Retiro, facing a lush garden. The original home, with a terrace, had been partially refurbished, eliminating the exterior space and dividing the common spaces into a series of rooms with different uses – entrance hall, living room, dining room, office, kitchen, pantry, and hallway. The project proposes their unification, recovering the curved wall of the staircase – which opens up and gives way to the successive domestic spaces – and cladding it with large artisanal curved ceramic pieces. In this dialogue, a new counter curve generates a laundry and airing space. 

By minimising the private sphere of the house, the common spaces are increased, becoming a single space where different activities can take place at the same time, making use of two ‘furnitectures’ that hug the pillars and service this large family dwelling. Once the home is freed of partition walls, the structure and heating pipes are left exposed. Two concrete pillars are broadened and serviced, providing a starting point from which the whole intervention grows.

The first four-metre-long ‘pillar-unit’ organises the entrance hallway with a turn, inviting us in. The piece of furniture, halfway between an entrance, an office, and a dining table, also serves as a cabinet for the crockery and boasts three drawers – for the three children to organise their things in the entrance – as well as a small bookcase.

In front of it, another ‘pillar-unit’ serves as a screen between the living room and the dining area, housing a minibar on one side and a hidden television on the other, and leaving space for the heating pipes. In the design of this piece, Emilio, the local cabinetmaker, investigated the technique used for the tambour roller shutters that his grandfather – also a cabinetmaker – used to make for the old bureaus typical of the 1920s. Now, this technique will be used vertically instead of horizontally, allowing it to open towards the sides, with the shutters rolling sideways, leaving them hidden within the side curves.

A continuous bench, bitten by this second piece of ‘furnitecture’, serves as a kind of limbo between the interior and the recovered terrace-balcony exterior, opening the house to the views of the nearby trees.

Urban Cabinets es una serie de proyectos de rehabilitación de vivienda que explora estrategias de diseño en torno a la idea de arquitectura-mueble. En cada uno de ellos, una familia de muebles-que-se-convierten-en-espacios configura domesticidades a medio camino entre estas dos escalas. El mobiliario crece, se torna XXL, se piensa arquitectónicamente. Pone en valor la materia hecha a mano y a medida, artesanalmente, en pequeñas empresas, y en cuya ejecución final in situ entrarán en diálogo diferentes oficios de obra de ambos ámbitos.

El segundo proyecto de la serie rehabilita una vivienda de bloque abierto de los años 50 en el madrileño barrio de Retiro, frente a un frondoso jardín. La vivienda original, que contaba con una terraza, había sido parcialmente reformada, eliminando este espacio exterior y compartimentando las zonas comunes de la casa en numerosas estancias organizadas por usos —recibidor, salón, comedor, despacho, cocina, despensa, pasillo—. El proyecto propone unificarlas, recuperando el muro curvo de la escalera —que va abriéndose y dando paso a los sucesivos ámbitos domésticos—, y revistiéndolo con grandes piezas cerámicas curvas fabricadas artesanalmente. Dialogando con él, una nueva contracurva genera un espacio de lavandería y tendedero.

Al minimizar el ámbito privado de la casa, el colectivo se amplía, convirtiéndose en un único espacio en el que pueden tener lugar distintas actividades simultáneas a través de dos arquitecturas-mueble que abrazan los pilares y equipan el espacio habitado por esta familia numerosa. Una vez despojado el inmueble de tabiques, la estructura y los tubos de calefacción quedan a la vista. Aparecen dos pilares de hormigón que se engruesan y se equipan, sirviendo de punto de partida desde el que crece toda la intervención.

El primer mueble-pilar de 4 metros de longitud articula el espacio de entrada a la vivienda a través de un giro, que nos invita a entrar. Este mueble, a medio camino entre una mesa de recibidor, de office y de comedor, es también una alacena para la vajilla, son tres cajones —para que los tres hijos organicen sus cosas en la entrada— y una pequeña biblioteca.

Frente a él, un segundo mueble-pilar sirve de filtro entre el salón y el comedor, albergando un minibar de un lado y una tele —oculta— del otro, y dejando pasar a través los tubos de calefacción de la casa. En el desarrollo de esta pieza, Emilio, un carpintero local, investiga la técnica aplicada en las puertas de persiana que solía utilizar su abuelo, también carpintero, para fabricar los antiguos bureaus de los años 1920. Ahora esta técnica se aplicará en vertical en vez de horizontal, permitiendo que el mueble se abra hacia los lados y deje rodar las piezas lateralmente, ocultándolas en las curvas laterales.

Mordido por esta segunda pieza de arquitectura-mueble, un banco corrido reversible sirve de limbo entre el interior y la terraza-balcón recuperada, abriendo la casa a la vista de los árboles vecinos.
