Reinterpretation and memory

Located on Esmoriz, this project is a contemporary reinterpretation of the fishermen’s house called “Palheiro”, wich emerged in the early 19th century as a response to the need the inhabit the beach.

These vernacular architectures have marked the landscape of the Portuguese coastline over the years. 

The architectural object intends to promote the preservation of this regional heritage as well as recover the collective memory of the community, establishing a direct dialogue between the past, present and future.

The archetypal form is entirely made of concrete, using wood to mark the stereotomy on the facades. This last material also appears in the rhythmic and highlighted covers.

Acess to the entrance level is via a ramp, raised from the ground, built on piles similar to the coastal walkways. It is in this same structure that platforms are also projected, resulting in terraces that appear as an extension of the interior space. This is one of the particularities of the work, which is guaranteed by the use of large sliding windows associated with the exterior shutters, which project onto the terraces, and consequently protect them.

Inside, the staircase is the central element that helps to define and organize the spaces, giving their amplitude.

At the programmatic level, the house is organized on two floors. The ground floor is organized by the entire social area, the master bedroom and a toilet. On the 1st floor, we find a large resting area, a second bedroom, toilet and storage.

Reinterpretação e memória

Situado na praia de Esmoriz, este projeto é uma reinterpretação contemporânea da casa de pescadores denominado de “Palheiro”, que surgiu no início do século XIX como resposta à necessidade de habitar a praia.

Estas arquiteturas vernaculares marcaram a paisagem da costa litoral portuguesa ao longo dos anos.

O objeto arquitetónico pretende fomentar a preservação deste património regional assim como recuperar a memória coletiva da comunidade, estabelecendo um diálogo direto entre o passado, o presente e o futuro.

A forma arquetípica, é integralmente executada em betão, utilizando a madeira para marcar a estereotomia nas fachadas. Este último material surge também nas portadas ritmadas e evidenciadas.

O acesso ao patamar de entrada faz-se através de uma rampa, elevada do solo, assente sobre estacaria à imagem dos passadiços da orla costeira. É nesta mesma estrutura que também se projetam plataformas, resultando em terraços que surgem como um prolongamento do espaço interior. Esta é uma das particularidades da obra, que é garantida pelo uso de grandes janelas de correr associadas às portadas exteriores, que se projetam sobre os terraços, e consequentemente os protegem. No interior, a escada é o elemento central que ajuda a definir e organizar os espaços privilegiando a amplitude dos mesmos.

A nível programático, a habitação organiza-se em dois pisos. No piso 0 organiza-se toda a área social, o quarto principal e uma instalação sanitária. Já no piso superior, encontramos um amplo espaço de repouso, um segundo quarto, instalação sanitária e arrumos.
