Farmhouse renovation Melbourne / Australia / 2016

This project involved the renovation of an old weatherboard cottage/ farmhouse in Woodend, a country town located about an hour north of Melbourne.

The existing heritage house is surrounded by views to the north and east, including of the infamous ‘Hanging Rock.’ Our intention was to maximise the views as much as possible from the main living areas, which were proposed to open out and extend towards the rear. A new cathedral ceiling was proposed to raise the height of the lounge room, to make the spaces more spacious and grand.

The new living areas would be a pleasant surprise when entered from the low-height entry foyer, which was screened off by a glazed wall with storage for firewood under; a quirky detail of cattle head skull coat hovers ominously above. A custom black steel fireplace was designed for the centre of the living room, to create a unique space divider that reinforces the profile of the new ceiling and roof above.
