The development is a basic outline study for the design of a mixed-use development in the site of 90-98 Broad Street, Birmingham. The area of Broad Street is in rapid expansion, and with the ongoing planning applications of several high-rise buildings, others are already on-site, and some completed or nearly complete. The development proposes a new-build high-rise building to fill a gap among the new skyscraper rising in the Birmingham City Centre. The proposal comprises two glazed rectangular towers linked by a solid base element. The space between them creates the opportunity to open a public passage connecting the developing area of Broad Street to the Northern site where sit Grosvenor Street, Sheepcote Street and the canal region of the city.
The building is composed of three main functions: Residential, Commercial and Leisure. Commercial and Leisure use is located to the ground, first, second, and third floors, allowing access to the public during day and night. The “trunk” of each tower consists of apartments. Access to these areas of the building is indeed limited to residents only. The top floors of the towers offer the opportunity to create nice and large shared zones that can be enhanced through mindful use of landscaping, setting a peaceful scenario of hanging gardens and breathtaking views of the city. The sky lounge can easily allow having a bar or a restaurant to host public or private events, like sunset aperitives or live music.
