Studio Samira Boon joined forces with the esteemed architectural firm Next Architects to bring forth an innovative solution for the main hall of the renowned cultural venue Theatres Tilburg. This project aimed to invent a site-specific solution that would transform the large concert hall into an intimate space suitable for smaller concerts and gatherings. The result of this remarkable collaboration was the Glowing Caterpillar, a shape-shifting mobile space divider.

Theatres Tilburg had a distinct vision in mind for their main hall; they desired a semi-transparent, adjustable, and easily deconstructed solution that would fulfill their need for adaptability. Drawing inspiration from nature, Studio Samira Boon conceptualized the Caterpillar, a space-divider holding the ability to change its form, imitating the adaptability held by real caterpillars.

In order to compliment the hall´s architecture by Jo Coenen and harmoniously interact with Peter Struyckens light artwork, the mobile screen of the Glowing Caterpillar boasts a modest white colour. However, the real magic comes to life as the lights of the hall dims, and the caterpillar's transformative experience takes place. The fabric unveils a mesmerising pattern of glow-in-the-dark yarn, initiating the screen to emit a subtle glow throughout the concert. This captivating effect was achieved thanks to a close collaboration with the Textiellab Tilburg, giving the possibility to skillfully interweave luminous yarn into the fabric. The result is a delicate and intricate pattern that enchants spectators.

The Glowing Caterpillar acts as a testament to the strength of innovative design and interdisciplinary collaborations. Not only does it fulfill the desires of Theatres Tilburg to create an intimate ambiance within the grandeur of the main hall, but it also exceeds in practicality; easy to take apart, easy to pack away.
