Wine Cellar “Baglio Donna Franca” | Studio 4e

Baglio Donna Franca, immersed in the silence of the vineyards of western Sicily, is located on the plateau/highland of the fiefs of Marsala, on the border with the territory of Trapani.

 From its location, it is possible to enjoy a panoramic view of exceptional beauty, in as much as the baglio overlooks the Egadi Islands, the reserve of the Stagnone, Marsala and Erice.

In the past the structure belonged to the Florio family, as a base for the retrieval of grapes coming from the Birgi plateau/highland, which were the unique basis for the preparation of "Marsala" wine and today, in the same place, the current owners and producers of organic wines of the highest quality,  hand down the culture of "Perpetual" wine and the method of production of wine typical of this area.

The Cantina project inside the baglio was born precisely from the need to make better known not only the products of the customers, but also the cultural values of the area through the enhancement of the environment and landscape.

 The new volume, which is a functional pertinence to the exercise of the company’s activity, is characterized by two iconic signs that constitute the concept of the project: the roof shape, obtained from the curvilinear profile of the wine bottle, and the division of the internal space of the refrigerated exhibition rooms, which takes up the broken line of the lignified branch of the vine plant.

 The study of the project took into account the architectural pre-existence of the baglio as the essence of the landscape, creating a volume with a contemporary and original language, which integrates harmoniously with the pre-existing history.

 Conceived as an attractive gallery of taste that connects the two existing volumes,  the reception and the restaurant, the new room is divided into several interconnected rooms: a large space used for tasting, which through a fully glazed wall gives access to the inner courtyard of the baglio, and six temperature- and humidity-controlled rooms for wine exposition. .

 The project of the Wine Cellar has been conceived following the most appropriate technical criteria in order to favor the best tasting through the creation of a customized environment and furniture, free of perfumes and adequately illuminated, through a careful lighting study.

 The new building, made entirely of a metal frame structure, takes into account both the landscape context and the preservation and enhancement of the existing baglio, so that it is well adapted and camouflaged in the natural environment, through a careful choice of materials. 

Il Baglio Donna Franca, immerso nel silenzio tra le distese dei vigneti della Sicilia occidentale, è ubicato sull’altopiano dei feudi marsalesi, al confine con il territorio di Trapani. Dalla sua posizione è possibile godere di una vista panoramica di eccezionale bellezza, in quanto il baglio si affaccia sulle isole Egadi, la riserva dello Stagnone, Marsala ed Erice. 

 In passato la struttura è appartenuta alla famiglia Florio, come punto di appoggio per il reperimento delle uve provenienti dall‘altopiano del Birgi, che costituivano la base unica per la preparazione del vino “Marsala” ed oggi, nello stesso luogo, gli attuali proprietari produttori di vini biologici di altissima qualità, tramandano la cultura del vino “Perpetuo” e il metodo di produzione vitivinicolo tipico di quest’area.                                                                                               

Il progetto della Wine Cellar all’interno del baglio nasce proprio dall’esigenza di far conoscere meglio non solo i prodotti della committenza, ma anche i valori culturali  del territorio attraverso la valorizzazione dell’ambiente  e del paesaggio.

Il nuovo volume, che costituisce una pertinenza funzionale all’esecizio dell’attività dell’ azienda, si caratterizza con due segni iconici che costituiscono il concept del progetto: la forma del tetto, ottenuta dal profilo curvilineo della  bottiglia di vino, e la divisione dello spazio interno delle sale espositive refrigerate, che riprende la linea spezzata del tralcio lignificato della pianta di vite. 

 Lo studio del progetto ha tenuto conto della preesistenza architettonica del baglio come essenza del paesaggio, creando un volume dal linguaggio contemporaneo ed originale, che si integra armonicamente alla preesistenza storica.                                                                   

Concepito come un’attraente galleria del gusto che collega i due volumi esistenti,  la reception e il ristorante, la nuova sala è articolata in diversi ambienti tra di loro comunicanti: un ampio spazio adibito alla degustazione, che attraverso una parete interamente vetrata permette di accedere al cortile interno del baglio, e sei locali a temperatura ed umidità controllata  per l’esposizione dei vini,  al fine di  favorire la migliore degustazione attraverso la creazione di un’ambiente ed un arredamento customizzato privo di profumi ed illuminato in maniera adeguata.                                                                                                                                              

Il nuovo edificio, realizzato interamente in struttura intelaiata metallica, tiene conto sia del contesto paesaggistico che della salvaguardia e valorizzazione del baglio esistente, in modo da ben ambientarsi e mimetizzarsi nell’ambiente naturale, attraverso un’attenta scelta dei materiali.
