The success of the project required unlocking the potential of the lower ground floor. To realize this potential circulation within the house and between indoors/outdoors was key. Once the planning was settled and clarity of circulation was achieved the opening up of the rear elevation introduced light, outlook, and a hugely improved spatial experience.

Materiality is a defining aspect of the project and is informed by the weighty almost industrial nature of the sandstone lower ground floor. Once the lower ground floor was spatially integrated with the house the palette of steel, stone, and timber could provide a coherent connection through the house while at the same time allowing each floor its own subtly different palette and identity.

The kitchen and scullery are composed from a series of freestanding pieces, a kitchen island, bench units, and a freestanding fridge block. This allows the kitchen to sit as a series of furniture pieces within the lower ground floor space. It enables the room to be read as a singular simple space allowing the sandstone perimeter walls to define the overall space.

The palette of materials in the kitchen comprises solid steel square section frames, steel angle bench edge and steel plate shelves with bench tops in black slate and cabinet fronts in teak veneer.
