Refurbishment of a 1930’s semi detached house, adding an extension to the rear and into the loft to create a modern family home.

The brief from our clients was to re-energise a tired and antiquated property to create a fun, lively family home by overhauling and increasing the living space with increased connection to the garden. Key to this was opening up the ground floor plan to link the kitchen, living and dining areas into one open and connected flowing space.

Working with the constraints of permitted development rights, a sweeping roof form was developed for the rear extension that respects the boundaries of the neighbouring buildings and ‘pinches up’ in the middle, adding height and an uplifting sensation to the main living area. We chose to express the roof structure to add texture and accentuate the soaring effect.

The zinc and exposed beam motif carries through to the loft extension, which creates a generously sized ensuite master bedroom with large windows overlooking the rear garden, and adds a sense of cohesion and continuity to the overall house.

A sympathetic palette of modern materials was chosen to complement the original house. Brown zinc, to tie in with the existing roof tiles, and painted brick walls to match the render.

Internally, the spaces were finished off with simple and elegant bespoke joinery and a restrained palette of high quality finishes and fittings, allowing our client the space to stamp their personality on the project.
