Melbourne / Australia / 2021
A new two-storey dwelling is proposed at the rear of an existing property in suburban Melbourne.
The existing site is fairly limited in available footprint, which is dominated by the existing house at the front of the block. The proposal is a direct response to rigid Council requirements and owner’s brief. The forms are arranged on ground floor to create a central entry that divides living and sleeping quarters via an internal courtyard. The first floor areas are setback and cantilever to create contrasting elements of depth and shadow, which are enveloped by a uniform gabled roof that references the neighbourhood context.
The proposed materials are red bricks re-used from existing demolition works, dark timber lining boards and metal cladding, to create an elegant, robust and sustainable home.
A Planning permit has been granted for the proposed development and working drawings are being prepared for construction.
