Apartment renovation at Halandri, Athens | Pinelopi Zoura

A couple decided to renovate their apartment to make a contemporary and comfortable home for their new needs as a family. It is located at Halandri, a suburb on the north of Athens. It is about 100sq.meters and has 2 bedrooms, a large entrance used also as a dining room, living room, bathroom, WC-laundry room with hidden storage and a very bright kitchen.

The layout was kept for the most part as the original with minor interventions to improve the functionality that a modern residence requires. Specifically, between the hall and the living room, the wall with the classic sliding door of old houses was removed, creating a larger living room, more spacious and brighter, as well as an entrance area that also functions as a dining room with the construction of a wooden buffet-seating furniture alongside the entire length of the wall. Thus, the new united space is much brighter and encompasses uses that do not need to be separated in a family's life today.

Then, a WC was created in the former storage room that also functions as a hidden laundry area in a deep closet that is also the linen closet of the house.

The kitchen was kept in its original position as a wish of the owners, mainly due to natural lighting, but it was completely renovated making full use of the entire space.

Finally, a walking closet was constructed in the master bedroom which was externally lined with embossed melamine sheets, creating an interesting surface that dominates the bedroom.

Soft tones were used in the whole apartment with some accents to elements that we wanted to highlight (eg the bookcase in the living room). Oak wood also was used a lot, in its natural shade, to furniture, floors or coverings. Most of the furniture/structures are especially customized, designed for the specific project for the full utilization of each space according to the needs of the owners.
