Copernico

Progetto di poltrona da lettura presentato per Porada International Design Award 2022 . Si ispira ad alcune ricerche formali del design degli anni 60\70 in cui
ergonomia, sensazioni di accoglienza e l’utilizzo di materiali naturali creavano sedute
per la lettura, l’ascolto di musica e l’attesa, nella ricerca di un confort superiore.
Il concept generale è quello di sedersi e rimanere sospesi, dolcemente
trattenuti dallo schienale. Il planetario con la sua forma sferica, le antiche carte del cielo
e del sole con la rotazione dei pianeti sul loro asse, e il tondo rosso del sole incastonato
nel cielo, rappresentano i punti di partenza del percorso creativo. Copernico viene da
sempre rappresentato nel suo studio tra sfere, planetari e globi terraquei. Ho progettato
questa seduta come parte di un suo studio immaginario.

Dal punto di vista formale la ricerca si è concentrata su alcuni punti focali:
• mantenere la forma sferica sottraendole l’aspetto elementare e correggendo, con piccole 
variazioni delle diagonali gli  effetti ottici distorsivi.
• Integrare lo schienale nella base mantenendo l’indipendenza visiva della base stessa ed
esprimendolo come una estensione neutrale e logica. Infatti manca del tutto
l’imbottitura esaltando, in questo modo, la forma ergonomica e avvolgente.
• Restituire il calore del legno.
• Creare la percezione che l’imbottitura rossa riempia tutta la semisfera come un sole
intrappolato nella sedia sul quale sia possibile sedersi.
• Perfetta ergonomia in relazione alla funzione di seduta per lettura\attesa: angoli di
seduta e schienale specifici (rispettivamente 13° e 6°),supporto lombare, rastremazione
verso l’esterno della parte superiore dello schienale per consentire libero movimento
del collo, rotazione della sedia a 360°, supporto dei fianchi.
I materiali previsti sono tutti riciclabili, plastic free e sostenibili:
• multistrato impiallacciato per lo schienale curvato a vapore, libero da formaldeide e
con colle sostenibili, Lo stesso, senza impiallacciatura, per la base di supporto del
cuscino.
• Legno massello, lavorato a fasce con CNC 5 assi, incollato e rifinito a poro aperto e cera
naturale.
• Pelle naturale, cucita nei bordi a copertura del cuscino in memory foam (a base d’acqua)
d’alta densità e ricoperto da leggera ovatta naturale.
• Sistema di rotazione, supporto e base in acciaio lucido o satinato senza parti in plastica.
• Base antiscivolo in silicone nero sostenibile in quanto non è un derivato del petrolio.

Reading armchair project submitted for Porada International Design Award 2022

It is inspired by some formal design research of the 1960s/70s in which ergonomics, feelings of cosiness and the use of natural materials created seats for reading, listening to music and waiting, in the search for superior comfort.

The general concept is to sit and remain suspended, gently held by the backrest. The planetarium with its spherical shape, the ancient charts of the sky
and the sun with the rotation of the planets on their axis, and the red circle of the sun set
in the sky, represent the starting points of the creative journey. Copernicus is
always represented in his study between spheres, planetaria and terrestrial globes. I designed
this seat as part of an imaginary study of his.

From a formal point of view, the research focused on certain focal points:
- maintaining the spherical form by subtracting its elementary appearance and correcting, with small
variations of the diagonals the distorting optical effects.
- Integrating the backrest into the base while maintaining the visual independence of the base itself and
expressing it as a neutral and logical extension. In fact it completely lacks
the upholstery, thus enhancing the ergonomic and enveloping form.
- Restoring the warmth of wood.
- Creating the perception that the red upholstery fills the entire hemisphere like a sun
trapped in the chair on which it is possible to sit.
- Perfect ergonomics in relation to the function of a reading chair: specific angles of
specific seat and backrest angles (13° and 6° respectively), lumbar support, tapering
outward tapering of the upper part of the backrest to allow free movement
of the neck, 360° rotation of the chair, hip support.
The materials used are all recyclable, plastic free and sustainable:
- veneered plywood for the steam-curved backrest, free of formaldehyde and
with sustainable glues, the same, without veneer, for the cushion support base.

- Solid wood, worked in strips with 5-axis CNC, glued and finished with open pore and waxed
natural wax.
- Natural leather, stitched around the edges to cover the memory foam cushion (water-based)
high density and covered with light natural wadding.
- Rotation system, support and base in polished or satin-finished steel without plastic parts.
- Anti-slip base made of sustainable black silicone as it is not a petroleum derivative.
