Surrealism and Futuristic | Nani Wen

In a recent project, AR-kee Design Studio transformed a space into an Instagrammable beauty clinic. Inspired by surrealist artists, we aimed to instill a sense of familiarity yet a dream-like experience.

From the reception to the individual treatment room concept, we intentionally added unconventional design elements into the space such as oversized human faces and body parts of ‘unusual proportions and beauty’ in line with the client’s business in the face and body aesthetics.

Clients can enjoy a comfortable, memorable hair wash and treatment room. Instead of the typical hair-washing sitting configurations, we create an intimate and sexy space by separating each ‘business-class’ recliner seat with glass partitions in psychedelic ‘holographic’ colours and whimsical feature ceiling design to give a sense of mystery during treatment.

We added a water-like reflective ceiling feature to allow clients to relax into a dream during treatments when they lay down to see the ceiling. Other treatment rooms use wavy mirrors to create the illusion of “an enhanced face”.

The mirrors not only serve as a wall accent, but the shiny material also reflects light which brightens up the room and creates the illusion of space.

The aesthetic clinic features several human face and body parts art pieces. The over-the-top human sculptures were curated to match the surrealist-themed clinic interior.

Breaking away from the typical white and clean color palette of clinics, we added colourful hues and lights for most interiors to evoke a fun yet cozy feel to the overall ambiance and experience in the clinic.

For the consultation room, materials such as glass partitions and curtains in the repeated thematic holographic colour finish are installed to provide privacy during consultation. Unlike typical consultation rooms, which tend to feel clinical and uninviting, we designed the consultation desk featuring steel, bolt, and nuts to give a robotic and futuristic vibe to the consultation room.
The corridors to treatment rooms play with soothing colour-changing lights to accentuate the ‘route of passage’ to treatment rooms in heightened anticipation, but also in an intimate way.
