Fieldhouse | MoDus Architects

L’edificio, situato nel paese di Laghetti (Comune di Egna, Bolzano) sulla sponda del fiume Adige, si distende in modo discreto ai piedi del rilievo montuoso del Parco Naturale Monte Corno che sovrasta a nord-est l’area di progetto.

La Fieldhouse si incunea tra il piano di gioco, demarcato da un campo da calcio preesistente, e le ripide pendici più come elemento infrastrutturale che come architettura: passando da muro di contenimento a lunga copertura lineare.

MoDusArchitects inizialmente incaricati di ripensare e ampliare  il vecchio edificio che ospitava gli spogliatoi e l’associazione sportiva, propongono una soluziona alternativa: una demolizione e nuova costruzione che vada a migliorare l'efficienza energetica del manufatto reimpiegando al tempo stesso l’impianto fotovoltaico già presente.

Che si tratti di campi da calcio, da tennis o da baseball, i campi ricreativi all'aperto sono paesaggi costruiti con precisione: la loro forma, le dimensioni, i bordi e l'orientamento sul sito sono determinati dalle regole del gioco che ospitano. — afferma Matteo Scagnol, co-fondatore di MoDusArchitects.

Con la sua geometria longilinea e articolata da forme semplici, Fieldhouse scavalca con disinvoltura i dislivelli esistenti e si inserisce con attenzione sul lato lungo a nord-ovest del campo da calcio ora facilmente accessibile dall’area parcheggio ampliata e dal nuovo piazzale di ingresso, a ridosso del pendio e parzialmente incassato in esso.

Fieldhouse diventa un nuovo punto di incontro per la comunità, non soltanto dedicato all’attività sportiva, ma anche a quella ricreativa:

“Volevamo restituire alla comunità un progetto accessibile e in grado di dare piena visibilità a tutte le attività del programma funzionale, soprattutto a quelle rivolte al pubblico e agli spettatori. Da qui la scelta di orientare il volume in senso longitudinale, per accompagnare i visitatori nella fruizione del loro tempo libero,  determinando così un nuovo spazio sociale.” — prosegue Sandy Attia, co-fondatrice di MoDusArchitects.

La struttura, a due piani, uno a livello zero parzialmente interrato e uno fuori terra con un’ampia terrazza, è realizzata in calcestruzzo armato faccia vista gettato in opera con tramezzature in laterizio. La facciata continua segue le geometrie e pendenze del sito, andando a formare un involucro uniforme ritmato da pilastri trapezoidali alternati e da tagli netti in corrispondenza delle aperture.

Sul lato est, una slanciata torre d’illuminazione, alta 11 metri e assottigliata verso l’alto, fa da contrappeso al corpo disteso della Fieldhouse. Essa incorpora i pali dell’illuminazione in un unico elemento andando a demarcare l’angolo dell’edificio  e diventando a sua volta un riferimento nel paesaggio.

La torre è parte integrante del sistema di copertura, dove 52 moduli fotovoltaici sono distesi sulla superficie piana esterna. Il nuovo edificio, grazie a un impianto in grado di coprire i consumi energetici con fonti rinnovabili pari al 50% del fabbisogno totale, è certificato CasaClima A.

Dal piazzale d’ingresso, con un’ampia scala coperta panoramica, si accede al primo piano dove si trovano l’appartamento del custode, gli uffici, una sala riunioni e per la didattica, lo spazio caffetteria con cucina con area ristoro sia interna che esterna e infine un'ampia terrazza per feste e incontri pubblici.

Al piano terra sono collocati invece i nuovi spogliatoi con docce e servizi per 30 atleti, dotati di un collegamento diretto sia con il campo da calcio che con l’interno dell’edificio.

Qui si trova, oltre ai magazzini per le attrezzature sportive, la nuova sede, separata e indipendente, con un deposito dedicato e un piccolo poligono interno, dei Tiroler Schützen, membri di associazioni che si richiamano agli antichi corpi di tiratori scelti legati alle tradizioni locali e culturali del Tirolo e della Baviera.

Il progetto della Fieldhouse di MoDusArchitects riflette sull’architettura delle piccole strutture sportive e sul loro carattere pubblico tracciando le linee guida di una tipologia poco esplorata nel panorama italiano. La rilevanza che la Fieldhouse assume per la comunità locale eleva la natura meramente funzionale del campo sportivo (così come spesso vengono denominati gli impianti agonistici) e genera un edificio dove servizi pensati per gli atleti si fondono con spazi ricreativi per tutta la comunità locale, anche per chi non pratica attività strettamente legate allo sport.

Located in the small town of Laghetti (Egna Municipality, Bolzano) nearby the riverbanks of the Adige river, the building sits at the foothills of Mount Corno whose natural reserve park forms a dramatic backdrop to the sports facility.

Infrastructural in character, Fieldhouse is wedged between a five-a-side football pitch to the north, the existing football field to the west and the steeping terrain to the east. With its low-lying body that transforms as it moves laterally along the site, that acts not only as a viewing platform for sporting events, but also as an outdoor venue for social occasions.

MoDusArchitects, appointed to demolish the old building that housed the changing rooms and the sports association, proposes a new building with an extension that would improve the building's energy efficiency while reusing the existing photovoltaic system.

"Be it football pitch, tennis courts, or baseball diamonds, outdoor recreational fields are precisely constructed landscapes: their shape, size, edges, and orientation on the site are regimented by the rules of the game that they host."— affirms Matteo Scagnol, co-founder of MoDusArchitects.

In many ways Fieldhouse is a connector piece, part of the larger puzzle of small-town settlements that line the valley basins of South Tyrol: residential neighbourhoods, light-industrial zones and sports infrastructures sit side-by-side in limited swathes of land.

In section, Fieldhouse mediates the topography with two levels that connect up the various programs and vista points.
Fieldhouse becomes a new community hub dedicated to sports, but also to recreational activities: "We wanted to give the community a project that was accessible and would grant full visibility to all the activities of the functional programme, especially those aimed at the public and spectators. This sparked the decision to position the volume longitudinally," — continues Sandy Attia, co-founder of MoDusArchitects.

The two-storey structure, one partially underground and one above ground with an adjoining large terrace, is made of reinforced - exposed concrete cast in situ. The glazed apertures take cue from the geometries and slopes of the site, forming a uniform envelope punctuated by alternating trapezoidal pillars and sharp cuts at the openings.
It incorporates the requisite lighting poles into an architectural element that delineates the outermost corner of the building—a hinge between built volume and the ground—to become a visual marker in the landscape.

The tower is an integral part of the roofscape whose long, flat roof houses the 52 photovoltaic modules. Thanks to a system that covers 50% of its energy consumption with renewable sources, the new building is CasaClima A certified.
From the entrance forecourt, a wide panoramic covered staircase leads to the first floor which hosts the caretaker's apartment, offices, a meeting and teaching room, the cafeteria area and kitchen with indoor and outdoor dining areas, and a large terrace for parties and public meetings.
The ground floor houses the new changing rooms with showers and toilets for 30 players, with a direct connection to both the football pitch and the inside of the building.

Here in addition to the storage facilities for the sports equipment is located the independently operated, local division of the Tiroler Schützen with a small indoor shooting range and dedicated storage area. The association is rooted in the local culture of South Tyrol and once constituted the former voluntary army.
The design of the Fieldhouse by to accompany visitors in the enjoyment of their leisure time, thereby creating a new social space.
On the east side, a lighting tower reaching towards the sky, 11-metres high and tapering upwards, acts as a counterweight to the extended body of the Fieldhouse.
MoDusArchitects reflects on the architecture of local sports facilities and their public character, tracing the outlines of a typology little explored on the Italian scene.

The relevance of the Fieldhouse for the local community elevates the functional nature of the sports field and generates an inclusive space where sports-centred services merge with recreational spaces that the entire local community can enjoy.
