Nid d'aigle bunkhouse | mainstudio

This bunkhouse was designed to accommodate the young musicians of a music camp in Lanaudière, a region of Quebec in Canada. The bunkhouse, designed to accommodate 30 campers, was built as a replacement for an outdated cottage that was located on the same site and given the same name - The Eagle’s Nest. 

The location of this bunkhouse stands out in the overall layout of the camp pavilions. Located on a promontory with impressive mature conifers overlooking a beautiful lake, it is set apart from other facilities. The design of this mountain hut was therefore significantly shaped by the natural environment of the site. It was essential to build gently through the trees to showcase them and to ensure a harmonious cohabitation between this nature and the visitors. The plan is arranged alongside the lake, optimizing the views over the water. The bulk is structured in two main volumes, the more impressive of the two contains the campers’ rooms, and the other houses the sanitary facilities.

Summer at camp is an immersion in a world away from the adult world, an immersion in a community where, due to their high number, the young people bring their own energy. Therefore, for the architect and the camp administrators, it was essential to offer a shelter that echoes the imagination of childhood. Thus, the simplicity of the building bulk recalls the key principles that characterize the hut intuitively illustrated by the child: a few vertical lines that represent the walls, a triangle representing the roof, and details that suggest doors and windows. The oversizing roof, a core element that rises from the forest, is also part of the materialization of this playful, almost imaginary world. The sober and monochromatic exterior materiality allows highlighting the form and the singularity of the building’s dimensions.

Ce chalet forestier a été imaginé pour loger la jeune clientèle d’un camp musical dans Lanaudière, une région du Québec au Canada. Le pavillon dortoir, conçu pour accueillir 30 jeunes musiciens, succède à un chalet devenu désuet qui occupait le même site et qui portait le même nom - Le Nid d’Aigle. 

La localisation de ce dortoir se démarque dans l’aménagement de l’ensemble des pavillons du camp. À l’écart des autres installations, il s’implante sur un promontoire occupé par d’impressionnants conifères matures qui surplombent un magnifique lac. Les caractéristiques naturelles du site ont donc fortement influencé la conception de ce refuge perché sur la montagne. Il s’est avéré essentiel de s’implanter délicatement à travers les arbres de sorte à les mettre en valeur et d’assurer une cohabitation entre cette nature et les utilisateurs. Le plan s’organise parallèlement au lac optimisant les vues sur l’eau. La volumétrie s’articule en deux principaux volumes, le plus imposant des deux abrite les chambres de campeurs et l’autre regroupe les installations sanitaires.

L’été au camp, c’est plonger dans un univers à l’écart du monde des adultes, une immersion dans une communauté où, de par leur majorité, les jeunes génèrent une énergie qui leur est propre. Pour l’architecte et les administrateurs du camp, il était donc essentiel de proposer un refuge qui fait écho à l’imaginaire de l’enfance. Ainsi, la simplicité de la volumétrie du bâtiment renvoie aux principales règles qui caractérisent la cabane intuitivement illustrée par l’enfant: Quelques lignes verticales qui représentent les murs, un triangle qui fait office de toit et des détails qui suggèrent portes et fenêtres. Le surdimensionnement du toit, un de ces éléments de base qui émergent de la forêt, participe également à la matérialisation de cet univers ludique quasi imaginaire. La matérialité extérieure sobre et monochrome permet la mise en valeur de la forme et de la singularité des proportions du bâtiment.
