DO UT DES | VACUUM ATELIER

The project incipit always starts with bargaining between the different resources that may present themselves. Economic constraints, regulatory constraints, spatial needs, continuity of materials, new use requirements, energy needs, are all resources that are part of the project, which from time to time retreat or conquer, dominate or succumb, shifting weights and outcomes.
The design concept to become real, from theory to artifact, identifies bargains, sacrifices the superfluous in favor of the fundamental, a Do ut des. In this sense, the design of a renovation becomes a negotiation of resources that shows the nature of the building, declaring it in exposed structure, missing finishes, saving materials and reusing them.
The project thrives on the contrast between raw materials and detailed elements: on the one hand, industrial concrete, exposed concrete structure bearing the signs of time, unfinished masonry showing the texture of the perforations; on the other hand, designer switches and handles, handcrafted iron elements such as raw iron doors, custom-made downspouts and parapets, alignments between materials and the study of the connecting joints. A white backdrop generates an almost surreal atmosphere where individual elements become protagonists of the space.
On the outside the same color scheme dominates, the plaster and travertine stone pick up the color and materiality of the existing stone, generating a three-dimensionality that combined with the complex pitched roof defines an unified artifact.
Both inside and outside, typological elements little analyzed in architecture such as downspouts and eaves become a design theme, a true experimentation, emerging from a neutral background.
The project is part of a research that Vacuum Atelier carries out called "Super-Domus" with the aim of rewriting a form of contemporary living, identifying a design method and intervention tools. Dwellings as objects that are often repeated in the anonymity of their architectural expression, although containers of compositional elements. The method of intervention is based on the identification of the compositional structure from which follows the formulation of the design action, the sum of a technical, formal or spatial need, through an abacus of adaptive micro interventions.

L'incipit del progetto inizia con la contrattazione tra le diverse risorse che possono presentarsi. Vincoli economici, vincoli normativi, esigenze spaziali, continuità dei materiali, esigenze di nuove destinazioni d'uso, esigenze energetiche, sono tutte risorse che fanno parte del progetto, che di volta in volta si ritirano o si conquistano, dominano o soccombono, spostando pesi ed esiti.

Il progetto per diventare reale, dalla teoria all'artefatto, individua delle contrattazioni, sacrifica il superfluo a favore del fondamentale, un Do ut des. In questo senso, il progetto di ristrutturazione diventa una negoziazione di risorse che mostra la natura dell'edificio, dichiarandola nella struttura a vista, nelle finiture mancanti, nel risparmio di materiali e nel loro riutilizzo.

Il progetto vive del contrasto tra materiali grezzi ed elementi di dettaglio: da un lato il cemento industriale, la struttura in cemento a vista che porta i segni del tempo, la muratura grezza che mostra la texture dei mattoni; dall'altro gli interruttori e le maniglie di design, gli elementi in ferro artigianali come le porte in ferro grezzo, i pluviali e i parapetti su misura, gli allineamenti tra i materiali e lo studio dei giunti di collegamento. Uno sfondo bianco genera un'atmosfera quasi surreale in cui i singoli elementi diventano protagonisti dello spazio.

All'esterno domina lo stesso schema cromatico, l'intonaco e la pietra di travertino riprendono il colore e la matericità della pietra esistente, generando una tridimensionalità che unita al complesso tetto a falde definisce un manufatto unitario.

Sia all'interno che all'esterno, elementi tipologici poco analizzati in architettura come i pluviali e le gronde diventano un tema progettuale, una vera e propria sperimentazione, che emerge da uno sfondo neutro.

Il progetto fa parte di una ricerca che Vacuum Atelier porta avanti denominata "Super-Domus" con l'obiettivo di riscrivere una forma dell'abitare contemporaneo, individuando un metodo progettuale e strumenti di intervento. Abitazioni come oggetti che spesso si ripetono nell'anonimato della loro espressione architettonica, pur essendo contenitori di elementi compositivi. Il metodo di intervento si basa sull'individuazione della struttura compositiva da cui consegue la formulazione dell'azione progettuale, somma di un'esigenza tecnica, formale o spaziale, attraverso un abaco di micro interventi adattivi.
