For the renovation of an existing bungalow, built in the 70’s, we designed an open and spacious new interior. During the last 20 years many add-on’s to the house blurred the original spatial organisation and made the quality of the original design difficult to experience. Maximising the building volume over the years also led to the house becoming darker and enclosed. The ambition is to let daylight penetrate deep into the house again.
The atmosphere should become warm, friendly and welcoming while still respecting the privacy of the owner to a maximum. We introduced a patio in the core of the bungalow, bringing in a new source of daylight for the main spaces, at the same time creating as a new focal point for the spatial organisation. Around this light and intimate space we organised the rooms in a new way, with long views from one side of the house, through the patio, to the garden, adding an experience of perspective and providing orientation. What started as a relatively simple renovation proposal, eventually became a complete overhaul of the whole house where we were able to pay meticulous attention to materialisation, detail, and integrated lighting and technical installations.
