The Steel House

We designed and built a Corten steel holiday home at the shore of a small lake in the east of the Netherlands. The Steel House is a house built on stilts that slopes upwards. The lowest point starts at the bedroom and bathroom, 2 steps higher is the kitchen with dining area and again 2 steps higher, at the highest point above the water, is the sitting area with 360º wood stove. Between the kitchen and dining table is a passage to a room with a bunk bed.

The house is open plan, only the bedroom with bunk beds and the bathroom can be closed with sliding doors. The height differences and furniture with built-in planters provide privacy. The house is closed on 3 sides and completely open at the front, so that all areas have a free and wide view of the forest and the lake.

On the outside the house is cladded with Corten steel that has turned into a beautiful red colour in recent months. The window frames are made of untreated Afrormosia wood. The inside of the house is finished with Ayous, a thermally modified type of wood. In front of the house is a large raised wooden deck with sun lounger, outdoor table and bbq.

Two heat pumps provide hot water and heating/cooling. The house has its own waste water system.
