Dark interiors aren’t popular because they make a space look smaller and gloomy.

Contrary to the common perception, dark interiors can look modern and luxurious with the right lighting, composition, and contrasts.

AR-kee Design Studio created dramatic contrasts when designing a dark-toned modern luxury apartment. This adventurous design concept uses light and dark materials and light and shadow effects.

For a start, we use an achromatic colour scheme as the primary colour selection for the overall apartment interior.

The walk-in closet consists of a full-height wardrobe and tinted glass shelves in black carpentry. Our design intention is to make the owners’ clothing colours stand out in the colourless wardrobe. An elegant vanity mirror with integrated LED light in the closet transforms the room into a modern dressing area.

The contrasting effect of dark and light colours is a foundation for creating an outstanding and sophisticated interior.

Thus, tones of grey wall coverings are applied to the wall in the master bedroom. The contrasting grey walls and gold trimmings in the bedroom furniture finishings add a luxury touch to the dark-coloured interior.

The master bathroom features more contrasting color schemes. The bathroom flooring is made of black and white tiles. A sexy quadrant mirror above the black vanity countertop becomes a beautiful centrepiece when the backlight lights up.

Like blinking gemstones, shiny materials never fail to give the impression of luxury. Thus, we have chosen gloss-finished black sintered stone for the peninsula kitchen. Gold-legged bar stools around the black peninsula created a gorgeous colour contrast.

Besides colour combinations, lighting plays an important role when creating a luxurious accent for a dark interior.

To create warm and comfortable moods in the home, we use various lighting fixtures in different parts of the apartment, such as a circular cove light ceiling in the living room and a ball shade pendant light above the kitchen countertop.
