ERA Offices | Cumulus
A narrow builders office, adaptively reused, becomes a modern collaborative workspace in the heart of Hobart, Tasmania. Hobart / Australia / 2021
Our clients approached us to design an inviting office with an open plan area, breakout meeting rooms, amenities, and relaxation spaces. Considering the modest budget of the project and the building’s limitations — a 180 sqm footprint, poor access to natural light, a heritage listing — we carefully used a mixture of solid Tasmanian Oak and veneer panels throughout the space to weave the areas together and, importantly, reflect the sustainable values of our client.
Framed by the polished concrete floor and the bright oriented strand board panel ceiling, the design focuses on rhythmic timber battens spanning the office. These expand along the front meeting rooms, giving an immediate sense of open space and connected work. The battens then contract over the kitchen and bathroom entrance, concealing the services, creating a natural transition towards the relaxation area, and offering secluded moments for individual work.
The timber’s warm tones and textures, alongside the floor’s contrasting finish, efficiently reflect the office’s low natural light and delicately frame the space’s dark joinery.
