I SAY LAB | Dongwoo Yim

This project is a design for a research and education center. The client is a language therapy research office and education provider for children. Using research from globally recognized universities and research institutions, the client provides tailored learning programs for children who are exposed to multiple languages; such as children in bilingual families and those who have lived in another country for a significant period of time.

Naturally, the first questions we asked were ‘what is a research and education center?’ and ‘what should such a center for children be?’ Understanding that receiving education or (language) therapy can be an unpleasant, sometimes even intimidating, experience for children, we thought about how we could improve the patient experience: namely, how our design could feel welcoming and engaging to children.

Making both the program clear and the extents of the space more readily legible was the first priority. Bookshelf walls were implemented to clearly indicate the role of reading in the client’s curriculum and to showcase the colorful and engaging books to the children. Meeting rooms and the office space employ transparent glass walls to avert the clinical feeling of opaqueness.

Another key design objective was to enable the patients to move through the space comfortably. To this end, rather than installing a series of treatment rooms and meeting rooms along a narrow linear corridor, an open floor plan with organically arranged rooms was chosen as the basis for the design; with each session room designed with two doors to allow a continuous, free flow of movement. In other words, allowing the patients to run around and be kids.
