For this restoration project of an old cellar into a living space and workshop, it is proposed to articulate the two parts of the building, one inhabited and the other in the making via an extension slipped between the rubble walls and invisible since the street. This is inserted between the existing house and the rehabilitated outbuilding. It opens the living space onto the garden and generates a patio while connecting the buildings to form a single one. The workshop, set up in the double height of the cellar, faces north to benefit from suitable light.

To balance the difference in level between the buildings, the ground is lowered to provide a generous single-storey space fully accessible to a person in a wheelchair, an exterior ramp providing access to the garden and then to the street.

The disbursement made for the entire project required reworking of the existing structures, thus making it possible to take over the costs of the new structures to be carried out. Two concrete slabs form the link between the buildings. This post-free space thus frees the facades fully open to the outside. 

The extension is intentionally discreet and sober to reveal the qualities of the existing building and amplify the relationship with the outside by contrast with the more massive and more opaque preserved and rehabilitated buildings.

The second work is limited to the maximum offering the materials in their raw state, the interventions targeted on old buildings are fully assumed.

We sought to build on what existed, to identify what constitutes the identity of the place and its qualities. 

An identical conservation or repair of existing materials is sought in order to restore the character of the buildings preserved as much as possible. The extension is integrated into the continuity of the existing building, intentionally transparent, leaving visible the volume and composition of the preserved facades and allowing great transparency towards the garden.

The materiality is expressed in a fairly simple and clear palette. The existing and old materials bring a specific atmosphere to the place, only the added parts are differentiated and assumed.

Our approach also tends to erase disability through architecture, a lever for inclusion and independence. Offer spaces in which we are not reduced to adding elements that mark a specific situation. These additions often have the effect of further stigmatizing disability to the detriment of a coherent architecture. From the design stage, the issues were fully integrated. The first idea is not to limit a person to certain living spaces because of their disability but on the contrary to push their physical limits as much as possible.

Pour ce projet de restauration d’un ancien chai en lieu de vie et atelier, il est proposé d’articuler les deux parties du bâtiment, l’une habitée et l’autre en devenir via une extension glissée entre les murs moellons et invisible depuis la rue. Celle-ci s’insère entre la maison existante et la dépendance réhabilitée. Elle ouvre l’espace de vie sur le jardin et génère un patio tout en reliant les bâtiments pour n’en former qu’un seul. L’atelier, déployé dans la double hauteur du chai, est orienté Nord pour bénéficier d’une luminosité adaptée.

Pour équilibrer le dénivelé entre les bâtiments, le sol est décaissé afin d’offrir un espace de plain-pied généreux entièrement accessible à une personne en fauteuil, une rampe extérieure permettant d’accéder au jardin puis à la rue.
Le décaissé réalisé sur l’ensemble du projet a nécessité des reprises en sous-œuvre des ouvrages en place permettant ainsi de reprendre les charges des nouveaux ouvrages à réaliser.
Deux plaques béton façonnent la liaison entre les bâtiments. Cet espace dépourvu de poteaux libère ainsi les façades entièrement ouvertes vers l’extérieur.

L’extension se veut volontairement discrète et sobre pour révéler les qualités du bâtiment existant et amplifier le rapport à l’extérieur par contraste aux constructions conservées et réhabilitées plus massives et plus opaques.

Le second œuvre est limité au maximum offrant les matières dans leur état brut dont les interventions ciblées sur le bâti ancien sont entièrement assumées.
Nous avons cherché à nous appuyer sur l’existant, à déceler ce qui constitue l’identité du lieu et ses qualités.

Il est recherché une conservation ou une réfection des matériaux existants à l’identique afin de restituer au maximum les caractères des constructions conservées.
L’extension s’intègre dans la continuité du bâti existant, volontairement transparente, laissant visible la volumétrie et la composition des façades conservées et permettant une grande transparence vers le jardin.

La matérialité est exprimée dans une palette assez simple et claire. Les matériaux existants et anciens apportent une atmosphère spécifique au lieu, seules les parties ajoutées sont différenciées et assumées.
Notre approche tend également à effacer le handicap par l’architecture, levier d’inclusion et d’indépendance. Proposer des espaces dans lesquels nous ne sommes pas réduit à l’ajout d’éléments marqueurs d’une situation spécifique. Ces ajouts ont souvent pour effet de stigmatiser encore plus le handicap au détriment d’une architecture cohérente. Dès la conception les problématiques ont été pleinement intégrées. L’idée première étant de ne pas limiter une personne à certains espaces de vie du fait de son handicap mais au contraire d’en repousser au maximum les limites physiques.
