This project is situated a few meters from the coast, facing the bay of Navidad in the central-southern zone of Chile. In the surroundings, a forest, typical of the transversal valleys, converges with the coast that was originally a productive beach, and is currently being developed as a holiday location. The brief responds to the needs of four different families, 14 people in total, that decided to make a second home together. Therefore, multiple and divergent preferences of the different owners are congregated in one volume, reduced to 111m2. 

Contrary to the typical constructions of a coastal zone the volume is erected vertically over the landscape, in an aim to reach a privileged view on the upper-level terrace, dodging the obstructions of nearby houses. Standing in this way, the liberation of the volume from the ground allows for the displacement of the typological distribution of a beach house, generating new relationships and programmatic associations on the vertical axis. This provokes a change in the spatial composition of the rooms, affecting their perception: spaces that are extremely reduced serve others that are quite large, conforming a small total surface whose visual weight is magnified. This is achieved by the reduced width in contrast to an exacerbated height, and by the scale and location of the windows on the façade, that contribute to this deliberately undefinable scale.

In the interior, the elongation of the vertical axis is transmitted through a central void that roams the building in its total height including the circulation, meanwhile enlarging the spatial perception of the common areas of the house. On the other hand, there are four private areas, one for each family, that are distributed on each floor at both extremes of the house, ensuring that all spaces are equally close to the centre. The size of each room is also equivalent, avoiding any type of exclusivity between families.

On the exterior the project is sculpted by standardizing the operations of the main façade and the roof: both are folded minimally under the same aesthetic criteria, escaping the usual division between these elements. The synergy of the square with its pair rotated is the gesture articulating each element of the project, including its position within the limits of the site and the exterior pavements that fill this air. Both interior and exterior are covered in raw wood, with finishes that allude both to the condition to which they respond, as to its counterpart: the first is an inert and atemporal grey that tends to eliminate the new condition of the house, the second is a pristine white that is exposed to the extreme conditions of the coast, like a cuirass or plumage that shines while also protecting.

Se sitúa a escasos metros de la costa, enfrentando la bahía de Navidad en la zona centro-sur de Chile. En el entorno confluye el campo forestado, propio de los valles transversales, con el balneario de origen productivo, en vías de desarrollo como polo vacacional. El encargo responde a la necesidad de 4 familias distintas –14 personas en total– que deciden hacer en conjunto su segunda vivienda. Por lo tanto, se reúnen en un mismo volumen de reducidos 111m2 las preferencias múltiples y divergentes de los distintos propietarios.

El volumen se contrasta con el entorno construido usual de una zona costera al erigirse de manera vertical sobre el paisaje, apuntando a alcanzar una vista privilegiada en la terraza del último nivel, esquivando la obstrucción de las casas aledañas. Al ponerse de pie, la liberación del volumen con respecto al suelo permite dislocar la distribución tipológica de una casa de playa, generando nuevas relaciones y asociaciones programáticas en el eje vertical. Esto provoca que la composición espacial de los recintos cambie, afectando su percepción: espacios sumamente reducidos sirven a otros bastantes amplios, conformando un total de escasa superficie, pero cuyo peso visual se magnifica. Esto se logra por obra de una crujía reducida, en contraste con una altura exacerbada, y por la escala y ubicación de los vanos en la fachada, que contribuyen a esta deliberada indefinición escalar.

En el interior, esta elongación en el eje vertical se transmite a través de un vacío central que recorre el edificio en toda su altura y que acoge las circulaciones, al mismo tiempo de ampliar la percepción espacial de los recintos comunes de la casa. Por su parte, los recintos privados son cuatro –uno para cada familia– y se distribuyen en los distintos pisos a ambos extremos de la casa, asegurando a todos los espacios la misma cercanía del centro. El tamaño de cada pieza también es equivalente y de esta forma se evita cualquier tipo de exclusividad entre las familias. 

En el exterior, la obra se esculpe al homologar la operación de la fachada principal y la cubierta: ambos se pliegan mínimamente bajo el mismo criterio estético, replicando hacia la calle las aguas del techo y de esta forma escapando de la división usual de estos elementos. En este cruce de ejes perpendiculares y oblicuos se produce la sinergia que compone, como si fuera un lenguaje, cada pieza de la obra; su posición con respecto a los límites del sitio, los pavimentos exteriores que llenan este aire y las ventanas que perforan las fachadas. Tanto interior como exterior se recubren en madera bruta, con acabados que hablan tanto de la condición a la que responden, como la de su contraparte: el primero es un gris inerte y atemporal que tiende a eliminar la condición nueva de la casa, el segundo es un blanco prístino que se expone a recibir la condición extrema de la costa, como una coraza o un plumaje que reluce a la vez que protege.
