A house in complete harmony with the landscape

Situated on the Mediterranean Sea, on the coast of Formentera, the house is the embodiment of the landscape and the slow and serene pace of life that the island promotes.

The project surges from the desire to integrate the architectural intervention with the physical environment both in composition and in colours and textures, combining linear Mediterranean architecture, minimalist principles and the island's natural materials.

The house is a volumetric composition of stone elements and flat roofs, evoking the traditional walls of Formentera's architecture. Made of natural dry stone with rustic wooden pergolas, the house is an extension of its surroundings. Other materials that characterise the house are micro-cement and timber, lending the home an earthy palette. The interiors are composed of made-to-measure joinery and furniture among enduring design icons. The light, the protagonist of the project, creates a play of light and shadow throughout the day that is reflected in every corner, giving the surfaces a vibrant dynamism.

Formed by a main body that stands out in proportions above the other volumes and is the centre of the house, the construction is articulated in different heights that help to break up the monumentality of the complex and give the building a human scale so necessary in the rustic terrain that surrounds it. The house also consists of an auxiliary body housing the guest suite, which is joined to the main building by means of a set of external stone walls that shape a back courtyard through which the house is accessed. This exterior passage, which is completely open, constitutes a protected area against the harsh conditions of the place and avoids direct exposure to the strong winds of the area. Owing to this climatological reason, different secondary protective spaces are generated around the perimeter of the construction, in the shade of the different pergolas and framed by the recesses in the walls.

The materials used on the exterior seem to have been taken from the land itself: plaster in a colour in keeping with the surroundings, wood and porches made of juniper trunks that blend in and blend in with the landscape. We can see elements characteristic of the vernacular architecture of the area in other details of the construction: the chimneys, the rounded edges of the corners and the wooden "board and bar" shutters.

The landscaping reflects the rocky and steep environment typical of the coast, minimally landscaped to avoid introducing landscape changes and enhancing integration with the native vegetation that surrounds the house. The plant species used are linked to the tradition of Formentera's agriculture and gardens, thus guaranteeing maximum adaptation to the Mediterranean climate and water conditions.

The saline water pool, overflowing and limited by a border of local stone, is situated parallel to the coast, blending into the horizon of the sea and marking the limits of an architecture that seems to have been designed by the island itself.

Una casa en completa harmonía con el paisaje

Situada en el mar Mediterráneo, en la costa de Formentera, la casa es la encarnación del paisaje y del ritmo de vida lento y sereno que promueve la isla. 

El proyecto surge de la voluntad de integrar la intervención arquitectónica con el medio físico tanto en composición como en colores y texturas, combinando la arquitectura lineal mediterránea, los principios minimalistas y los materiales naturales de la isla.

La vivienda es una composición volumétrica de elementos en piedra y techos planos, que evocan los muros tradicionales de la arquitectura de Formentera. Realizada en piedra natural seca con pérgolas de madera rústica, la vivienda es una extensión de su entorno. Otros materiales que caracterizan la vivienda son el microcemento y la madera, que aportan a la casa una paleta natural y terrosa. Los interiores se componen de carpintería y mobiliario a medida entre iconos de diseño perdurables. La luz, protagonista del proyecto, va creando a lo largo del día juegos de luces y sombras que se reflejan en cada rincón, dotando las superficies de un vibrante dinamismo.

Formada por un cuerpo principal que destaca en proporciones sobre los otros volúmenes y que es el centro de la casa, la edificación se articula en diferentes alturas que ayudan a romper la monumentalidad del conjunto y dotan el edificio de una escala humana necesaria en el terreno rústico que la rodea. La vivienda consta, además, de un cuerpo auxiliar donde se sitúa la suite de invitados y que se une al edificio principal mediante un juego de muretes exteriores de piedra que van conformando un patio posterior por el que se accede a la vivienda. Este paso exterior, totalmente abierto, constituye una zona protegida frente a las duras condiciones del lugar y evita una exposición directa a los vientos fuertes de la zona. Debido a este motivo climatológico, diferentes espacios secundarios de protección se van generando en el perímetro de la construcción, a la sombra de las diferentes pérgolas y enmarcados por los retranqueos de los muros. 

Los materiales que se han empleado en el exterior parecen sacados del terreno mismo: revocos en color acorde al entorno, madera y porches de troncos de sabina que se confunden y mimetizan con el paisaje. Podemos observar elementos característicos de la arquitectura vernácula de la zona en otros detalles de la construcción: las chimeneas, los cantos redondeados de las aristas y las contraventanas de "tabla y barra" de madera.

El paisajismo refleja el entorno rocoso y escarpado típico de la costa, mínimamente ajardinado evitando introducir cambios paisajísticos y potenciando la integración con la vegetación autóctona que rodea la vivienda. Las especies vegetales utilizadas están vinculadas a la tradición de la agricultura y los jardines de Formentera, de manera que se garantiza la máxima adaptación a las condiciones climáticas e hídricas mediterráneas.

La piscina de agua salina, desbordante y limitada por un borde de piedra local, se sitúa paralelamente a la costa, confundiéndose con el horizonte del mar y marcando los límites de una arquitectura que parece diseñada por la isla misma.
