Albion | Outpost

Outpost are pleased to present a recently completed extension and refurbishment of Albion Terrace located in the Albion Square Conservation Area, Haggerston.

The original property was a Victorian terraced house from the 1840’s in need of modernisation, repair and extension. The brief was to extend to the side and rear of the original outrigger.

Our approach at Albion Terrace was to create a dynamic form of architecture, that offered a beautiful internal ceiling scape and composition of the natural day light. The design is made up of 4 equal mini-pitched roofs, with narrow slot west-facing rooflights that pick up the movement of the late afternoon, but do not allow excessive heat gain.

The roofs and rear elevation are clad in a pre-weathered standing seam zinc, combined with the warmth of a bespoke solid Douglas Fir door and window. The project aims to blend new and old in a simple yet striking design.

Albion Terrace also implemented low-carbon operational space heating and hot water solutions. The space heating is served via an air source heat pump unit, and solar water heating panels for the hot water supply. The system is also future proofed for hotter summers with that the space heating system can be switched to pump chilled water within integrated pipe work in the ceilings during the warmer weather days. The house also take advantage of grey water harvesting and eco-friendly sheep wool insulation.
