The house in Ribela is the result of an intense dialogue; first, about the decision between two families who decide to share a plot and, second, the environment.

Integrating the home into the landscape is a design decision. The plot forms part of the limit of the rural nucleus and an effort is made to minimize its landscape impact. This is a very anthropized territory. The agricultural terraces, so common on the banks of the Miño and Sil, showed us how the insertion of the house should be in the topography.

The intersection of the landscape and the relationship between the three main pieces (Existing House, New House and Pool) causes the need to obtain a common “0 level”. Thus came the idea of ​burying the house and creating a limited and intimate space for the new residence.

The proposal is based on the layout of a traditional house from the southern part of the province of Ourense, which is laid around a courtyard enclosed by large walls. In this typology, the access is through a large wooden gate. Next to this wall were the services [Bodega, Alpendres y Almacenes] and the Hórreo. From the patio, a staircase led to the house on the top floor, below the stables.

The excavated patio of the house works exactly the same, the service rooms [Garage, Installations / storage room, Multipurpose room, Kitchen, Toilet, Playroom and Laundry room] open to it. On the contrary, the served spaces [Living Room and Bedrooms] open onto the plot. The staircase goes up to the watchtower that is the walkable green roof, an incredible place to get lost contemplating the beautiful meander of the Miño river.

The house adapts to the environment, closes to the north and opens to the south [breaking the corners of the living room and bedrooms]. Cross ventilation is sought [Patio-Plot]. The surrounding terrain protects it and gives inertia to the rooms that regulate the interior temperature. The house will be enjoyed differently depending on the time of the day and time of the year.

In the hot summers of Ourense, life takes place inside the patio in the morning. In the afternoon, the kitchen terrace and the swimming pools are the most privileged places. In winters, the rooms are not shaded by the width of the patio, making the plot the most used outdoor space.

La vivienda en Ribela es el resultado de un diálogo intenso. En primera instancia, entre dos familias que deciden compartir una parcela y por otro lado el lugar.

La integración de la vivienda en el paisaje es una decisión de diseño. La parcela forma el límite del núcleo rural y se trata de minimizar su impacto paisajístico. Este es un territorio muy antropizado. Las terrazas agrícolas, tan habituales en las riberas del Miño y Sil, nos indicaban cómo debía ser la inserción de la casa en la topografía.

La intersección del paisaje y las relaciones entre las tres piezas principales (Vivienda Existente, Vivienda Nueva y Piscina) provoca la necesidad de obtener una “cota 0” común. Así surge la idea de enterrar la casa y crear un espacio limitado e íntimo para la nueva residencia.

La propuesta parte del esquema de la vivienda tradicional meridional de la provincia de Ourense que se organiza en torno a un patio cerrado por grandes muros. En esta tipología se accede a través de un gran portón de madera. Junto a esta muralla estaban los servicios [Bodega, Alpendres y Almacenes] y el Hórreo. Desde el patio, por una escalera, se accedía a la casa en planta alta, debajo los establos.

El patio excavado de la casa funciona exactamente igual, a él se abren las estancias de servicio [Garaje, Instalaciones/trastero, Cuarto de usos múltiples, Cocina, Aseo, Sala de Juegos y Lavandería/Tendedero]. Por el contrario, los espacios servidos [Salón y Dormitorios] se abren a la parcela. La escalera sube a la atalaya que es la cubierta vegetal transitable, un lugar increíble para perderse contemplando el hermoso meandro del río Miño.

La vivienda se adapta al entorno, se cierra al norte y se abre al sur [rompiendo las esquinas del salón y los dormitorios]. Se buscan ventilaciones cruzadas [Patio-Parcela]. El terreno circundante lo protege y da inercia a los recintos que regulan la temperatura interior.

La casa se disfrutará de forma diferente según la hora del día y la época del año. En los calurosos veranos de Ourense, la vida se hace en el interior del patio por la mañana. Por la tarde la terraza de la cocina y las piscinas son los lugares más privilegiados. En los inviernos, el ancho del patio no oscurece las habitaciones, lo que hace que la parcela sea el espacio al aire libre más utilizado.
