Canto Rio & Canto Mar | ARCHITECTS OFFICE
Architecture Rio de Janeiro / Brazil / 2023
Exalting the virtuous encounter between nature and the urban in the city of Rio de Janeiro from a pre-existing reformulated structure, Canto Rio & Canto Mar emerged, a project signed by Greg Bousquet, one of the founders of Triptyque Architecture, today in charge of the agency ARCHITECTS OFFICE.
Located between Arpoador and Copacabana beaches, the land is in a privileged location, given its strategic layout in the mesh of Rio between the abundant coastal landscape and the effervescent city. The area pre-inhabited by unconventional structures for housing buildings was the starting point for developing the project.
The concept conceives the etymology of “coexist”, evoking the same principle of living organisms that are born, integrate and mold themselves to the pre-existing, giving new life to the territory. Thus, there are two towers with distinct, but complementary characteristics, derived from a common base.
At the base of the buildings, the three existing slabs were reconfigured to house spaces for different activities, with generous common areas that give rise to the meeting. The parking lot was also positioned in the adapted structure.
The project was permeated by a fluid dialogue with the surroundings. Soon, still on the ground floor, the landscaping that enters the building inspires organic forms and primordial elements of the area, such as water in a sinuous and provocative water mirror.
In the buildings, the two towers show the poetics of the concept by presenting two proposals that coexist in harmony. The refuge tower overlooking the sea, encompasses a volume highlighted by horizontal lines, with large staggered balconies, allowing greater privacy and framing of the view. The slabs were demarcated by perimeter planters with plant species that overlap the facade, alluding to the greenish hills of the city's skyline. The program was aimed at family homes, with 4 suites and generous internal areas, like a retreat in the middle of nature.
The urban tower, in turn, overlooking the city, reveals a unique volume, highlighted by vertical lines, in a long-lined building outlined by porous and adaptable enclosures. Here, studios focused on young and single audiences were positioned in order to propose a complete enterprise in synergy with the dynamics of the population of Rio de Janeiro.
Canto Rio & Canto Mar corresponds to the contemporaneity of inhabiting and its democratic ways of living, giving vent to local and global needs for residential buildings. And it develops sustainability, by requalifying the surroundings, giving new and better uses to the old structure.
