Project candidate for the Design Award "A seat at the table" promoted by RIVA 1920, and American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) first edition 2022.

Table made of wooden planks in American red oak essence.

It is inspired by some of the constituent elements of the skeleton of a traditional wooden boat, namely the frames, the locks and the deck. It reworks the construction logic through design operations of overturning, rotation and aggregation, recalling, as a whole, the tradition of the ''shipwrights'' of the Venetian arsenal, from which it takes its name.

The support structure of the upper deck is made up of wooden planks that are the same as parts of the framework of traditional wooden boats: two ''ordinates'' (offset, joined and rotated 180 degrees with respect to the position used in boats), two ''serrette'' (smaller planks that tighten and join the ordinates, supporting the deck) and a ''coperta'', the upper deck.

The "serrets" are joined together by an original connection system consisting of two wooden "wedges" connected to the individual "serrets" and joined together by means of a round wooden pin that fits into the holes previously made in the "wedges". This system prevents the "wedges" from opening and keeps the connection between the "wedges" and the "frames" in the right position.  The top supports are also original, consisting of four round steel plates that are recessed into the top and engaged to the "locks" by means of the two steel pins in each plate. Four steel safety screws reinforce the connection of the "serrette" to the "ordinate" and strengthen the union between the parts. 

The particular design intends to restore the sense of unity expressed by the union between the parts that make up the structure of traditional boats, whose individual elements connected to each other build the rigidity and strength to withstand storms with procedures and techniques developed by experience and history.

The design of this table intends to reflect on these technical and cultural heritages by reworking lines, logic and perceptions.  As part of the research on drawing lines, special attention was given to the upper line of the "ordinates" whose development does not reach the upper level, creating, in the front elevation, the suggestion of distant lands. This is a reference to the Serenissima's commercial and cultural exchanges with the Orient, the suggestions of which are often perceived in the city.

The choice of oak in the project stems from research into the use of this essence in boatbuilding in general and its use in the history of the Venice Arsenal. Baldissera Drachio wrote in 1596 in his "Pensieri": "God endowed this most Christian of cities with so many oaks and munilas of a kind that from the last confines of his empire all around, and even above the arzeri of the lagoon that surrounds it, he sowed and scattered so many that not only on every important occasion they would have been sufficient for him but superfluous (if I may say so) for ever, and this useful and necessary gift the divine majesty gave it for its continuous and perpetual nourishment" (1). The oak represents 'life and virtue' for the Serenissima and recalls its history.  Its open-pore processing and natural wax finish enhance the grain and reflections, leaving all its charm intact.  The table top is made up of four 25 x 240 cm planks with slightly bevelled joints to recall the planking of the galley deck, thus highlighting each individual plank.

Tavolo costituito di assi di legno in essenza di quercia rossa americana.

Si ispira ad alcuni degli elementi costitutivi dello scheletrato di una barca in legno tradizionale ovvero le ordinate, le serrette e la coperta, ne rielabora le logiche costruttive attraverso operazioni progettuali di ribaltamento, rotazione e aggregazione richiamando, nell’insieme, la tradizione dei ’’maestri d’ascia’’ dell’arsenale veneziano da cui recupera il nome.
La struttura di supporto del piano superiore è costituita da assi di legno declinate come parti dell’ossatura delle barche in legno tradizionali: due “ordinate” (sfalsate, congiunte e ruotate di 180 gradi rispetto alla posizione utilizzata nelle barche), due “serrette” (assi più piccole che stringono e solidarizzano le ordinate supportando il piano) e una “coperta” ovvero il piano superiore.

Le “serrette” sono unite tra loro da un sistema di raccordo originale composto da due “zeppe” in legno collegate alle singole “serrette” e congiunte tra loro tramite una spina di legno tonda che alloggia nei fori precedentemente predisposti all’interno delle “zeppe”. Tale sistema impedisce alle “serrette” di aprirsi mantenendo nella giusta posizione la connessione tra “serrette” ed “ordinate”.  Originali sono anche i supporti del piano costituiti da quattro piastre tonde in acciaio da incassare nel piano e innestare alle “serrette” per mezzo delle due spine di acciaio presenti in ogni piastra. Quattro viti di sicurezza in acciaio rinforzano la congiunzione delle “serrette” alle “ordinate” e consolidano l’unione tra le parti. 

Il particolare design intende restituire il senso di unitarietà espresso dall’unione tra le parti che compongono la struttura delle barche tradizionali, i cui singoli elementi tra loro collegati costruiscono la rigidità e la forza in grado di resistere alle tempeste con procedure e tecniche elaborate dall’esperienza e dalla storia.

Il disegno di questo tavolo intende riflettere su questi patrimoni tecnici e culturali rielaborando linee, logiche e percezioni.  Nell’ambito della ricerca sulle linee di disegno una particolare attenzione è stata assegnata alla linea superiore delle “ordinate” il cui sviluppo non raggiunge il piano superiore creando, nel prospetto frontale, la suggestione di terre lontane. Un richiamo agli scambi commerciali e culturali della Serenissima con l’Oriente le cui suggestioni sono spesso percepibili nella città.

La scelta della quercia nel progetto nasce da una ricerca sull’utilizzo di questa essenza nella costruzione di barche in generale e sul suo utilizzo nella storia dell’Arsenale di Venezia. Scrive nel 1596 Baldissera Drachio nei “Pensieri”: “Iddio dotò questa christianissima città di tanti roveri e munila di sorte che dagli ultimi confini del suo imperio per ogni intorno, e fin sopra gli arzeri della laguna che la circonda, tanti ne seminò e sparse che non solamente in ogni sua importante occasione gli sariano stati a sufficienza bastevoli ma superflui (s’è lecito a dire) in eterno, et questo utile e necessario dono le diede la divina maestà per suo continuo nutrimento et perpetua”. La quercia rappresenta “vita e virtù” per la Serenissima e ne rievoca la storia.  La sua lavorazione a poro aperto e la finitura a cera naturale ne esalta le venature e i riflessi lasciandone intatta tutta la sua suggestione.  Il piano del tavolo è costituito da quattro assi di 25 x 240 cm leggermente smussati nelle linee di giunzione al fine di richiamare il tavolame della coperta delle galee ed evidenziando, in questo modo, ogni singola tavola
