Located in the city center of Charleroi, the new Polomé’s jewelry is established in a former supermarket. Starting from an undefined space which deepness was emphasized by a uniform suspended ceiling covering the entire surface, the aim of the architectural intervention is to erase this connotation by highlighting existing singularities, hidden under several finishing layers.

The design of the project has been initiated as a circuit following the client’s progression through the space. In fact, this journey begins outside the building. The vitrine is shaped as a contemplation space marked by a round recess made of glass bricks. Through its diaphanous characteristics, the brick preserves the intimacy of the jewelry as well as it illuminates the street. The entrance in the store is rhythmed by a series of thick beams, witness of the structural logic of the building that sequences the space. The organization of the surface becomes scenography when the circuit borders the long curtain materializing the division between scenic space – the exhibition hall – and backstage – the atelier and office spaces. This journey is also sporadically punctuated by alcoves, whose intimacy is accentuated by the textile drape surrounding the fitting space. The scenography is also perceived in the lighting of the store, where mountings underline sometimes the horizontality of exhibition desks, sometimes the verticality of alcoves. Finally, the client’s circuit is naturally guided toward the back of the jewelry thanks to a brighter source of natural light emanating from a second glass brick recess echoing the vitrine along the street. The brick restructures the light and illuminates the choir. The other side of the store is punctuated by tall mirrors that reduce its linearity by playing with reflections. These vertical elements also delimitate more individualized fitting spaces.

The chosen materiality creates a chromatic unity through the space meanwhile playing with different textures with the aim of highlighting various colors of the precious gems. The choice of working with textiles on the walls and the floor as well as projected cellulose on the ceiling participate in the creation of an intimiste acoustic.

Situé au cœur de Charleroi, le nouvel établissement du joaillier Polomé prend place dans une ancienne grande surface. Partant d’un espace indéfini dont la profondeur est renforcée par un faux- plafond uniforme sur toute la surface, l’enjeu de l’intervention architecturale vise à effacer cette connotation en mettant en valeur les singularités du lieu dissimulées sous les différentes couches uniformisant l’espace.

La conception du projet a été appréhendée comme un parcours suivant le client dans sa progression dans l’espace. Ce cheminement commence en réalité à l’extérieur. La vitrine est traitée comme espace de contemplation marquée par une niche en briques de verre. Celle-ci, au travers de ses propriétés diaphanes, préserve l’intimité de la bijouterie tout en rayonnant sur l’espace public. L’entrée dans le magasin se fait au rythme des grandes poutres, témoins de la logique structurelle du bâtiment, séquençant l’espace. L’agencement de l’espace devient scénographie lorsque le parcours se fait le long d’un rideau marquant la séparation entre espace scénique - la salle d’exposition - et coulisses - l’atelier d’orfèvrerie et les bureaux. Ce même parcours est également ponctué sporadiquement d’alcôves, dont l’intimité est renforcée par la matière textile entourant l’espace de discussion et d’essayage. La scénographie se poursuit dans le traitement de la lumière, dont les luminaires entrent en scène comme élément marquant tantôt l’horizontalité des vitrines de présentation, tantôt la verticalité des alcôves. Enfin, le parcours du client se poursuit naturellement vers le fond du magasin guidé par une lumière zénithale renforcée par une seconde niche en briques de verre faisant écho à la façade donnant sur la rue commerçante. La brique déstructure la lumière et illumine le chœur de ce lieu. De l’autre côté de la bijouterie, de grands miroirs réduisent la linéarité de l’espace en jouant avec les projections. Ces grands éléments délimitent également des zones d’essayage plus individualisées.

La matérialité choisie crée une unité chromatique de l’espace bien que jouant sur les textures dans le but de mettre en avant les couleurs des matières précieuses exposées. Le choix porté sur des matières textiles aux murs et au sol ainsi que de la cellulose projetée au plafond confèrent à l’espace une acoustique intimiste faisant oublier ses dimensions importantes.
