A location. The existing house was built in the 1980s and is at the centre of land situated beneath the road. The position enables visitors to tower above the property, revealing it only partially thanks to the dense vegetation. Our first step is to exploit the location setting by creating a path, so visitors can be accompanied and the location revealed gradually in the form of visual progression. To our mind the landscape approach is fundamental and closely linked to the architecture - these two aspects mingle together and intertwine, they are mutually enriching and help to create a sense of wellbeing within us. An internal/external limit is a concept that fills us with passion, both in the art of living and the perception it arouses. Living in a house makes it possible to engage with this peace and the surrounding nature on a daily basis. Our aim was to provide the family with a small comfortable habitat immersed in an oasis of peace.

Contrast falls within the remit of our work - contrasting shapes, colours, materials and light. The first noticeable contrast concerns the vegetation. Owing to its position, the house splits the land into 2 parts with clearly distinct features - the northern end has tall pine trees that create an undergrowth effect, revealing the house's 3 arrangements via the creative roofing. Only the central arrangement opens up to us, with an inverted roof slope. To reinforce this sensation, the architectural approach that guided a large part of the design was the creation of a strong line that crosses the plot and the house from one side to the other. This accompanies the visitor in the discovery of the location through to the lower end of the garden to the south, offering a spectacular view of the town and its surroundings. This strong line is expressed in various ways depending on the arrangement. A natural carpet can trigger this line in the form of horizontal plateaus detached from the land, a vertical break through the front of the entrance with the creative use of proportions and materials. This façade melts into one at visitor level. Then the half-open door, which splits the dry stone wall, reveals the second part of the landscape by framing the outside fantastically.

Your gaze is guided in the direction of the water, the heart of the house at the end of the outdoor water feature, passing by the indoor spa, where the Geopietra wall is mirrored. Physically, visitors can’t get near the water though; the fixed glazing curiously forces you to go beyond this trajectory to discover the internal volumes of the house. The creative use of volumes and materials accompany the journey. The impression we had during our first visit to the house was a sense of focus, despite the presence of large windows facing out onto a view as far as the eye can see. We analysed it because it links to the internal shape of the volume. The sloping ceiling provided ample height inside, which decreased at the façade. The architectural approach was to split the house into 2 and reverse the direction of the roof, creating a glass façade 4 metres in height to the south. On the upper level we decided to open the façade up to the panorama, creating a large sunken terrace with a stunning view set in the heart of the house.

An encounter. The owners' art of living is instrumental in the design. We like to spend time listening to future occupants, hearing about their habits, tastes, wishes and needs. The draft we produce transpires from experiencing a location, the information provided by the client, and our own sensitivity. We feel the human relationship is fundamental. We have to gain an insight into people's lives to best meet their expectations, which are sometimes unknown. This is evident in the internal arrangement of living areas. The requirement was to work on the modularity of the living space adjacent to the main room, to isolate some areas and create volumes with different shapes depending on the room's use.  One part of the room can be connected to the main apartment, the lounge can be very open-plan, or an intimate setting can be created by the fire. These variations are possible thanks to a set of mobile walls, pivoting doors, sliding doors and glass walls with fabric inserts. The creative use of mirrors reinforces the main thoroughfare and the deconstruction of the space. The stone walls had to be in perfect harmony with the interior of the house when entering the apartment from outside.

This was possible thanks to the company Geopietra, which provides technically guaranteed stone wall solutions with beautiful shapes and colours. The glass façade with large sliding frames can virtually open its entire length, making the indoor/outdoor limit less defined in summer. The façade is suspended from an overhanging metal structure made of tall, criss-crossed, slender masts staggered inside the house. This opening is accompanied by a bioclimatic pergola with adjustable masts and we adapted this structure.  Some masts were removed thanks to the installation of collar ties, making the structure more airy and freeing up some space. This idea of lightness is our guideline when implementing the materials that we work with. The outdoor pool was created with this in mind. The pool edge effect had to be avoided in favour of large stone slabs hanging over the water. The water comes to life and runs to the end of the overflowing pool, and the staggered steps seem to float on this moving water. It's always surprising to see the complexity of technical details in more aesthetically sophisticated projects. Understanding materials, mastering assemblies, the anticipation and technical research enrich our designs over time.

Materials. Texture. Illumination. Light. It is the connection between these elements that brings our projects to life. They're essential for creating a frame of mind and experimenting with every area of a house. Hot, cold, smooth, rough, opaque, clear. Wood, stone, cement, metal, glass, fabric. It's a question of relationships and proportions.

Un luogo. La casa esistente, costruita negli anni ‘80, si trova al centro di un terreno situato sotto la strada. La posizione consente al visitatore di sovrastare la proprietà, rivelandola solo parzialmente, grazie alla densità della vegetazione esistente. Il nostro primo passo è stato quello di sfruttare questa configurazione del luogo attraverso la realizzazione di un sentiero, che consente di accompagnare il visitatore e di svelargli progressivamente il luogo sotto forma di sequenze visive. L’ approccio paesaggistico è per noi fondamentale ed intimamente legato all’architettura:  questi due aspetti si accostano e si intersecano, si arricchiscono reciprocamente e consentono di sviluppare in noi la sensazione di benessere. Il limite interno/esterno è un soggetto che ci appassiona, sia nell’arte di vivere che nella percezione che suscita. Vivere in una casa consente di confrontarsi quotidianamente con questa calma, con questa natura che ci circonda. Il nostro obiettivo era di offrire a questa famiglia un piccolo scrigno confortevole immerso in un’oasi di pace.

Il contrasto rientra nelle linee guida del nostro lavoro: il contrasto delle forme, dei colori, della materia, della luce. Il primo contrasto percettibile riguarda la vegetazione. Per la sua posizione, la casa divide il terreno in 2 parti con caratteri ben distinti: la parte in alto a nord è piantumata con grossi pini che creano l’effetto di un sottobosco e rivelano, tramite il gioco dei tetti, le 3 sequenze della casa. Solo la sequenza centrale si apre a noi con una pendenza invertita del tetto. Per rafforzare questa sensazione, la scelta architettonica che ha guidato gran parte del progetto consiste nella creazione di una linea di forza che attraversa l’appezzamento e la casa da una parte all’altra ed accompagna il visitatore nella sua scoperta del luogo, fino alla parte bassa del giardino a sud: un vista incredibile sulla città ed i suoi dintorni. Questa linea di forza si esprimerà sotto forme diverse a seconda delle sequenze: un tappeto minerale può innescare questa linea sotto forma di altipiani orizzontali staccati dal terreno, la rottura verticale attraverso la facciata d’ingresso con un gioco di proporzioni e di materiali. A livello del visitatore, questa facciata s’impone come un tutt’uno.

Poi, lo schiudersi della porta d’ingresso, che spezza la parete in pietra posata a secco, rivela la seconda parte del paesaggio attraverso un’inquadratura fantastica sull’esterno. Lo sguardo viene guidato nella direzione dell’acqua, il cuore della casa all’estremità del bacino d’acqua esterno, passando per la spa interna, dove si specchia il muro geopietra. Ma fisicamente, il visitatore non può avvicinarsi all’acqua, la vetrata fissa lo spinge ad oltrepassare curiosamente questa traiettoria per scoprire così i volumi interni della casa. Il gioco dei volumi e dei materiali accompagna il cammino. L’impressione che abbiamo avuto durante la nostra prima visita nella casa è stata una sensazione di raccoglimento, malgrado la presenza di grandi vetrate che danno sull’esterno e sulla vista a perdita d’occhio. Noi l’abbiamo analizzato in quanto collegato alla forma interna del volume. Il soffitto spiovente offriva all’interno un’ampia altezza che si riduceva nella facciata. La scelta architettonica è stata quella di separare la casa in 2 e di invertire la direzione del tetto, offrendo così una facciata a vetri alta 4 metri a sud. Al piano superiore, abbiamo deciso di aprire la facciata sul panorama creando una grande terrazza a pozzo, un belvedere incredibile incastonato nel cuore della casa.

Un incontro. L’arte di vivere dei proprietari è l’elemento strutturante di un progetto. Ci piace dedicare del tempo all’ascolto dei futuri occupanti, analizzare le loro abitudini di vita, i loro gusti, i loro desideri, le loro esigenze. Lo schizzo che elaboriamo nasce dall’incontro tra un luogo, i dati forniti dal cliente e dalla nostra sensibilità. Il rapporto umano è per noi fondamentale. Dobbiamo immischiarci con rispetto nella vita delle persone per rispondere al meglio alle loro attese, a volte inconsce. Questo punto è ben evidente nella sistemazione interna degli spazi abitativi. Il desiderio era di lavorare sulla modularità dello spazio abitativo adiacente al locale principale, in modo da isolare alcuni spazi e creare volumi a geometria variabile a seconda dell’occupazione: una parte della sala può essere annessa all’appartamento principale, il soggiorno può essere un volume molto aperto come pure più intimo accanto al camino. Queste variazioni sono possibili grazie ad una serie di pareti mobili: porte a bilico, porte scorrevoli, pareti in vetro con inserti in tessuto. Un gioco di specchi consente di rafforzare sia gli assi principali che la destrutturazione dello spazio. I muri in pietra che dall’esterno entrando nell’appartamento dovevano essere in perfetta armonia con lo stile interno della casa.

Questo è stato possibile, grazie alla ditta geopietra che offre la possibilità di creare murature in pietra con forme e colori desiderati, belli e tecnicamente garantiti. La facciata a vetri, costituita da grandi telai scorrevoli, può aprirsi per la maggior parte della sua lunghezza, rendendo in tal modo il limite interno/esterno più indefinito nel periodo estivo. La facciata è sospesa da una struttura metallica  a sbalzo, costituita da pali incrociati, tesi e slanciati, sfalsati all’interno della casa. Questa apertura è accompagnata da una pergola bioclimatica con pale orientabili, la cui struttura è stata rivisitata da noi. Alcuni pali sono stati rimossi grazie all’installazione di tiranti, rendendo la struttura più aerea e liberando così lo spazio terrazza. Questo concetto di leggerezza è per noi una linea guida nella realizzazione dei materiali che lavoriamo. La piscina esterna è stata studiata con questa idea. L’effetto bordo piscina doveva essere evitato a vantaggio di grosse lastre di pietra destrutturate a sbalzo sull’acqua. L’acqua prende vita e scorre all’estremità della vasca in overflow, i gradini sfalsati sembrano galleggiare su questa acqua in movimento. È sempre sorprendente vedere la complessità dei dettagli tecnici dei progetti più esteticamente raffinati. La comprensione dei materiali, la padronanza degli assemblaggi, l’anticipazione, la ricerca tecnica, arricchiscono i nostri progetti nel tempo.

Materiali. Materia. Illuminazione. Luce. È l’associazione di questi elementi che anima i nostri progetti, che danno loro vita. Sono essenziali nella creazione di stati d’animo, nella sensazione che sperimentiamo attraverso ogni spazio della casa. Il caldo, il freddo, il liscio, il rugoso, l’opaco, il lucido. Il bosco, la pietra, il cemento, il metallo, il vetro, il tessuto. È questione di rapporto e di proporzioni.
