1.0 About the project

Yatai New Dynamic shopping mall, with a total of 108,380 ㎡ floor area for commercial use, is located in the heart of Erdao District, Changchun,China

The original building, long abandoned, was clad in grey marble and surrounded by elevated road, making it appear distant and uninviting. the designer believed that commercial spaces should deliver a sense of openness and intimacy to people. Thus, he planned to achieve a degree of transparent and geniality in the building. Taking in the romantic sentiments of Changchun, famed as the 'Spring City of Northland’, the designer decided to create a landmark of love here. In the name of love, the design concept of a “diamond realm " sets Yatai New Dynamic like a diamond on the arterial road of Erdao District. A trendy and stylish centre for the city's lifestyle seekers draws people in to feelloved!

2.0 Design challenge

How to open up and create friendly spaces in a building surrounded by elevated road, and to deliver unique shopping experience is the challenge for the designer.

3.0 Unique features

Everyone longs for that feeling of being loved. Inspired by diamond as a token of love, the designer constructs a diamond-shaped structure to open up the front façade. Shining with crystal-clear glass, the new building resembles a cut diamond set between two towers.

The new building features a crystal-clear glass façade, and looks like a carefully cut diamond set between two towers. The diamond-shaped structure is exquisite, radiant and transparent. The building is thus able to blend into its surroundings, inviting people to come closer. The open vision blurs the boundary between the interior and exterior, and brings in ample daylight as well as urban landscape.

To create unique spatial experience, the designer replaces the original atrium structure with dynamic lines of a diamond surface, The horizontal layout of each floor is also diamond-like，Moving lines are cut irregular and circular，and a continuous interactive platform structure is formed，The design is a composition of many diamond surfaces reflecting a constant change of colour and material in different spaces, leaving customers with a prominent visual impression.

In the design of vertical movement, the sightseeing lift connects the sub-basement all the way to the sixth floor, whilst escalators are used between the first and third floor and between the third to sixth floor, allowing the interior space to 'breathe' openness and intimacy. The sightseeing lift is equipped with a 30-metre-high LED screen, which levitates to the top and interacts with the "diamond" screen on the ground level. Here, creativity meets cutting-edge technology for infinite imagination!

The main atrium installs 760 diamond-like light sources to simulate natural light, which brings a touch of natural appearance to the otherwise enclosed top ceiling with a sensory tease.

The entire 108,380-square-meter shopping mall is divided into five theme spaces on seven floors: Diamond Food, Time Travel, City Parlor, Love Castle and Sky Bridge.

Sunlight is particularly important in Changchun during its long winters. The shopping centre offers two spots that come in direct contact with sunshine: Time Travel and City Parlor. Here, the choice of wood colour comes in harmony with sunlight to create a natural ambience, conveying the designer's Eco-Fashion design philosophy.

Come and see how nature gets in contact with technology as you walk up the steps in the Time Travel space through a wall of lush greenery and digital art installations, or simply sit down on the large steps and soak up the sunshine and city view.

On the opposite side, the City Parlor, with large areas of wood and golden colours,is also flooded with sunlight. Here, one is certain to feel surrounded by love and warmth. The huge bookcases that run from the second to the sixth floor guide the vertical movement in the space, whilst adding a humanistic and cultural element into the environment. The 100-metre-long window bar provides a place for people to read and relax, ideal for families to spend time together.

The Love Castle and Sky Bridge in the higher floors continue with the theme of love by filling the aesthetically pleasing spaces with dreamy colours, making it ideal for romantic surprises and lovely scenes. The Sky Bridge, which connects the Love Castle, embodies the emotional link in the shopping centre. Standing on the bridge, the Castle of Love reveals its splendor right in front of you, inviting you and your loved one in to make a wish and record this romantic moment!

The basement level is seamlessly connected to Metro Line 2, which draws in customer traffic and popularity for the Diamond Food court. Inspired by the concept of “The search for taste of 19 Carat ", the space conveys the message to “live for love and love for food”. The large "diamond" ceiling in blazing orange colour brings a strong visual impact that stimulates your taste buds and senses, immersing you in a culinary treasure trove that awaits discovery.

Yatai New Dynamic creates a wide variety of scenarios and offers the largest shared spaces among shopping centres in Changchun. It is a fine example of placing emphasis on the care for people in commercial spaces.

The entire space extracts elements from the natural world. Diamond, wood and light; a large number of environmental-friendly and recyclable materials are used to convey the Eco-Fashion design philosophy. The interaction between people and space is harmonious and symbiotic.
