Refurbishment of a small apartment in the heart of Milan

This project started with the intention of including all our core values of comfort, space flexibility, light stream and thoughtful design, into a very small surface. The challenge was also represented by the natural light coming only from one side and by the client request of adding a guest room. A clear open layout allowed us to overcome these preconditions.

We divided the space into the bedroom area and the living area where two partitions floor to ceiling define the area. One incorporates the kitchen and the related storage, the other squares the space allowing depth for a folding bed and a wardrobe. Both made of dark wood, these partitions run over two sides of the perimeter, allowing an open, fluid space. The third side is made of white bespoke regular panels, some of which include the well hidden doors to bedroom and bathroom. The latter is conceived as a shelter dug up of a full block of travertine.

But the real protagonist of the project is the big island placed perpendicular to the kitchen partition: a solid block of black marquina marble cut through by a long travertino platform, to challenge gravity. The intersection of volume and surface, solid and empty, black and cream, heaviness and lightness make this element a living sculpture and the centerpiece of our creative practice. The strength of the black marble block, the grainy texture of the wood, the long veins of the travertine embrace the whole space with no interruption. One is taken into an immersive experience from the moment of entering, to the passing through, till the use of the space.

Ristrutturazione di un piccolo appartamento nel cuore di Milano

Questo progetto è nato dall’idea di voler includere comfort, flessibilità dello spazio, flusso della luce e design strutturato, in una superficie molto piccola. La luce naturale proveniente solo da un lato e la richiesta del cliente di aggiungere una stanza per gli ospiti rappresentavano un ulteriore vincolo. Attraverso un layout chiaro e un linguaggio architettonico incisivo abbiamo fatto fronte a queste esigenze. Lo spazio abitativo è diviso in zona notte e zona giorno. La zona giorno è ben definita da due setti che dal pavimento arrivano al soffitto. In uno di essi è stato incorporato l’angolo cottura e la dispensa, l’altro, a sua volta, raddrizza lo spazio ed incorpora un letto a ribalta e un armadio. Entrambi realizzati in legno scuro, questi setti corrono su due lati del perimetro, permettendo uno spazio aperto e fluido. Il terzo lato è composto da un sistema regolare di boiserie che cela le porte a bilico della camera da letto e del bagno. Quest’ultimo è concepito come uno scavo ricavato da un blocco intero di travertino.

Ma il vero protagonista del progetto è la grande isola posta al centro dell’area cucina: un blocco di marmo nero marquina attraversato da una lunga piattaforma di travertino, quasi a sfidare la gravità. L’intersezione di un volume e di una superficie, un pieno e un vuoto, il nero e il beige, la solidità e la leggerezza, fanno di questo elemento una scultura vivente e il centro della nostra pratica creativa. La forza del blocco di marmo nero, la texture granulosa del legno sulle pareti, le lunghe venature del travertino avvolgono l’intero appartamento. A partire dall’ingresso si è immediatamente immersi in un’esperienza totale che prosegue nel percorrere lo spazio e si amplifica con il viverlo.
