ENG - Tokyo is the largest city on earth – a sprawling metropolis of 37 million people where life is lived at breakneck speed. Yet, amidst the noise and the bustle of the city, it is also possible to find moments of surprising calm, a dramatic contrast understood well by architect, designer and Salvatori collaborator John Pawson.

Pawson spent his formative years in Japan, “hanging around”, as he puts it, the studio of celebrated designer Shiro Kuramata, and his Span table forms the centrepiece of the dining room in Salvatori’s Tokyo apartment. Placed in a minimally appointed space, the delicate and precise balance of the Bianco Carrara surface and cherry wood suggests a sense of harmony that is complimented with accessories from Salvatori’s Home Collection – the Pietra tray, the Gravity paper weight – and Piero Lissoni’s Stone Tatami texture on the walls and floors. Inspired by traditional Japanese matting, the tactile surface evokes the rush and cotton fabrics used for tatami, and the delicate pattern appears almost malleable.

Situated in Omotesando – one of the most exciting districts for contemporary architecture – the Salvatori apartment is a short walk from buildings by SANNA, Toyo Ito and Tadao Ando. But while the dynamic, groundbreaking structures here are informing new architecture around the world, the apartment takes a more timeless approach. In the living room, the muted light from the vast floor-to-ceiling windows rakes the Bamboo surface that has been used on the walls in contrasting layers, creating a subtle variation of texture. Organised around Franz Siccardi’s graceful Ta_Volo coffee table, and completed with Elisa Ossino’s sculptural Urano lamp, the room is understated and calm – the prefect place to relax and read after a morning browsing the famous bookstores of the Jimbocho district.

After the calm of the apartment, the Shinjuku district is a startling hive of activity. Stopping briefly on the terrace of Shinjuku Station to watch the trains coming in and out of the world’s busiest railway station, it’s on to labyrinthine alleyways of Golden Gai and the 200 tiny bars, clubs and restaurants, for something quick to eat and drink. And then home, to the peaceful sanctuary of the bathroom – the Stone Parquet floor introducing a gentle animation that calls to mind the movement of water, and which leads to Ossino’s Alfeo basins from the Fontane Bianche collection, and the designer’s elegant, tall Archimede mirror. With the Rain texture on the walls recalling a “rustling grove of bamboo stalks”, as Lissoni puts it, and Pawson’s Span bench, the bathroom offers a sensual place for restoration and reflection.

ITA - Tokyo, metropoli tentacolare con 37 milioni di abitanti che vivono a ritmi frenetici, è la più grande città del mondo. Eppure, in mezzo al rumore e al trambusto della città, siamo riusciti a ritagliare momenti di sorprendente calma, un netto contrasto ben interpretato dallo stile di John Pawson, architetto, designer e nostro partner.

Pawson ha trascorso gli anni della sua formazione in Giappone, “in giro”, come afferma egli stesso, presso lo studio del notissimo designer Shiro Kuramata, e il suo tavolo Span è il pezzo intorno a cui ruota la sala da pranzo dell’appartamento Salvatori a Tokyo. In un ambiente minimalista, il delicato e perfetto equilibrio fra il Bianco di Carrara e il legno di ciliegio suggerisce una sensazione di armonia, ulteriormente accentuata dagli accessori della nostra Home – il vassoio Pietra L, il fermacarte Gravity – e dalla finitura Stone Tatami disegnata da Piero Lissoni su pareti e pavimenti. Ispirata alla tradizionale stuoia giapponese, la superficie tattile della delicata texture evoca i tessuti di giunco e cotone utilizzati per i tatami, apparendo quasi malleabile.

Situato a Omotesando – uno dei quartieri più interessanti dal punto di vista dell’architettura contemporanea – l’appartamento è a pochi passi dagli edifici di SANNA, Toyo Ito e Tadao Ando. Mentre le strutture dinamiche e avanguardistiche del quartiere si fanno portavoce delle nuove tendenze architettoniche del mondo, l’appartamento appare al di fuori del tempo. Nel living la luce penetra dalle ampie finestre a tutta altezza e si scompone sulla superficie Bamboo, posata sulle pareti con strati a contrasto per creare sottili variazioni nella texture. Disposto intorno al grazioso coffee table Ta_Volo di Franz Siccardi e completato dalla lampada-scultura Urano di Elisa Ossino, l’ambiente è sobrio e ispira quiete, diventando un gradevole rifugio per rilassarsi e leggere dopo una mattinata trascorsa a visitare le famose librerie del quartiere Jimbocho.

Lasciamo la pace dell’appartamento ed entriamo nel quartiere Shinjuku, brulicante e operoso alveare. Dopo una breve sosta sulla terrazza della stazione di Shinjuku per osservare i treni in ingresso e in uscita dalla stazione ferroviaria con il più alto numero di passeggeri al mondo, proseguiamo addentrandoci nel dedalo di vicoli del Golden Gai con i suoi 200 minuscoli bar, locali e ristoranti, per un pasto veloce. Tornati a casa, veniamo avvolti dalla pace del bagno-santuario con pavimento Stone Parquet, che anima delicatamente lo spazio suggerendo il movimento dell’acqua, e che presenta con grazia i lavabi Alfeo di Elisa Ossino della collezione Fontane Bianche e l’elegante e slanciato specchio Archimede, anch’esso della designer. La texture Rain sulle pareti, come suggerisce Lissoni, evoca un “fruscio di canne di bambù” e la panca Span di Pawson elevano il bagno a luogo sensoriale per il recupero energetico e la riflessione.
