In the city of Sedhiou there are no designated places where local culture can be handed down,
therefore there is a need to create a cultural center that serves three main functions:

-Education

-Exhibitions

-Performaces

The project is divided into two main concepts:

The open space is defined by the volumes that host the main activities, and is protected by a
mangrove sun shading system, six met e r s above . The boundaries between inside and outside are non defined which allows access from all directions, similarly to how art and culture can be
interpreted: human activity is a continuous evolution that is open to everyone.
The design process began by understanding the connection between the assigned area and the
surroundings. It developed along the longitudinal axis of the lot; the office is situated, facing the
main road, while the restrooms are in a more isolated area. The heart of the project is t he central
fulcrum where the three volumes overlook and relate to each other. The different heights of the
volumes introduces a hierarchy.

The user can modify both the interior and exterior spaces according to their needs, giving them
flexibility . For instance, during workshops, the movable wooden panel can be completely opened, encouraging an intermingling of the various activities which take place.
Particular attention was paid to the sustainability of the construction in order to guarantee optimal the rmohygrometric conditions. It is obtained through the construction of thick walls made of laterite with small openings in the top, allowing natural ventilation. The coverage consists of two layers, one made of corrugated sheet supported by wooden profiles for the volumes and the secondary with shielding panels made with the mangrove to protect from the sun.

Crucially, the project aims to draw from and accentuate the local character and culture. Therefore colour influenced by the textiles and art of the ar ea, plays an important role in this project. Furthermore, particular attention has been paid to the use of indigenous materials, which can act as a flywheel for the residential architecture of the surrounding area as well as future public works, ultimately better integrating the project.
