This was a meaningful project for us as architects in South Africa. The upgrading and additions to the Philippi Stadium formed part of the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The site was earmarked as one of two venue-specific training sites (VSTS) in the greater Cape Town area. The criteria for selecting these VSTSes were that they should add value and be of use to the broader community post 2010, that they should attempt to redress the imbalances of the past, and leave a lasting legacy for SAFA, PSL and football development at large.
