Louis Kahn’s inspiration, 50 years later | ALM

The Côte-des-Neiges library was built in 1982 by the architects Jodoin Lamarre Pratte. It develops on 3 levels around a central hopper under a skylight. The main materials used are cherry wood and brick, and in some places the concrete has been left exposed. We find in the volumes, with the central atrium, in the choice of materials, the inspiration of Louis Kahn's architecture.

In 2018, the City of Montreal wishes to modernize this library, in particular by integrating an automated return and sorting system. The mechanization of the book processing process is also an opportunity to review the internal workings and work process of librarians.

Our team decided to take up the architectural inspiration of the architects of the building, that is formerly the British Yale Center of the great architectural master Louis Kahn. Like this work, we have chosen to integrate in the atrium a cylinder for the integration of the book sorting system. As much as that of Yale is concrete (1972), we chose glass to correspond more to our time (2018), but also in a desire to make the system visible to the public, transparent and shimmering light reflecting on the glass.

The end date of the works is scheduled for the end of 2019.

La bibliothèque de Côte-des-Neiges a été réalisée en 1982 par les architectes Jodoin Lamarre Pratte. Elle se développe sur 3 niveaux autour d’une trémie centrale sous un puits de lumière. Les principaux matériaux utilisés sont le bois de merisier et la brique, et à quelques endroits le béton a été laissé apparent. On retrouve dans les volumes, avec l’atrium central, dans le choix des matériaux, l’inspiration de l’architecture de Louis Kahn.

En 2018, la Ville de Montréal souhaite moderniser cette bibliothèque, notamment en intégrant un système de retour et de tri automatisé. La mécanisation du processus de traitement des livres est aussi l’occasion de revoir le fonctionnement interne et le processus de travail des bibliothécaires.

Notre équipe a pris le parti de reprendre l'inspiration architecturale des architectes du bâtiment, c'est-à-dire le Centre Britannique de Yale du grand maître architectural Louis Kahn. Tout comme cette oeuvre, nous avons choisi d'intégrer un cylindre dans l'atrium pour l'intégration du système de tri des livres. Autant celui de Yale est en béton (1972), nous avons choisi le verre pour correspondre davantage à notre époque (2018), mais aussi dans une volonté de rendre visible le système au public.

La date de fin des travaux est prévue pour fin 2019.
