Finding affordable housing is one of the most common problems for young adults nowadays. However, when one finally finds an apartment on a budget, turning it into a comfortable home is no less challenging. This interior design project by Nelly Prodan Design admirably showcases how to make the most of small one-bedroom apartment despite the space and budget restrictions.

At 45 m2 (485 ft2) this apartment is on the smaller side, but the client’s main requirement was to separate the living room from the kitchen while making both fully functional and spacious enough to be comfortable.

When a wall was added between the living room and the kitchen, a new problem arose. Since the kitchen had no windows of its own, its lack of natural light became extremely apparent. To mitigate this issue, a room-wide window was installed at the top of the wall between the rooms.

The simple modern design of the interior uses a neutral palette and natural materials with minor streaks of color in every room.

One interesting decision was to cover one of the living room’s walls with varnish instead of painting it. Uncovered concrete adds some freshness to the room contrasting with other minimalistic design elements.

Each of the rooms in this compact apartment serves a well-defined purpose, but as a whole they make for a perfect home for a young couple without kids.
