Historical Wonder - New service centre for the first Italian railway | Lorenzo Maggio

The Bayard station, completed in 1839, united Naples with the city of Portici and was the first Italian railway connection.

The ancient Bourbon factory has long been in a state of total abandonment: the vegetation completely covers the construction, preventing the perception of the volumes that compose it.

The project provides for the redemption of the historical station of the first railway in Italy.

Opportunity to recover, safeguard and integrate a fragment of the memory in the city of Naples.

Urbanistically it is inserted in the context of Porta Nolana, with the main prospect dominating Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, and from here guaranteeing pedestrian and vehicular accessibility.

Integration of new volumes with the pre-existing urban context, connecting imaginatively historical epochs. Through the reuse of the old factory and providing new functions to respect its identity.
Recovery of the historical façade with the geometric and compositional matrix, the new proposal provides on the ground floor the ancient restored parament, and on the first floor the memory of the old façade reinterpreted with new function.

The volumes that are part of the restaurant area, hotels and offices, are set back from the main facade of the station, thus creating a compositional regularity where it is possible to perceive the hierarchy of the elements and the relationships between them. The buildings are placed in a staggered way and tend to wrap around a center, this represented by the main inner courtyard, which acts as an element of balance between the volumetric parts, center of gravity.

With the withdrawal of the volumes from the road line of Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, a green square is created in front of it, a meeting place and access to the service complex. Like the internal court that becomes a place of aggregation, where one can spend free time in contact with nature. The project foresees a strong presence of trees, as iconic elements of connection with the past, thus recovering the original character of the site and the area of the station it was characterized.

La stazione Bayard, ultimata nel 1839, univa Napoli con la città di Portici e fu il primo collegamento ferroviario italiano.

L’antica fabbrica borbonica versa da tempo in uno stato di totale abbandono: la vegetazione compre totalmente la costruzione impedendo la percezione dei volumi, tra i quali anche opere di abusivismo edilizio, che la compongono.

Il progetto prevede il riscatto della storica stazione della prima ferrovia in Italia.

Occasione per recuperare, salvaguardare ed integrare un frammento della memoria della città di Napoli.

Urbanisticamente si inserisce nel contesto di Porta Nolana, con il prospetto principale dominante Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, e da qui garantendo accessibilità pedonale e carrabile.

Integrazione dei nuovi volumi con le preesistenze del contesto urbano, collegando immaginariamente le epoche storiche. Tramite il riutilizzo dell’antica fabbrica e prevedendo nuove funzioni al rispetto della sua identità.
Recupero della facciata storica con la matrice geometrica e compositiva, la nuova proposta prevede al piano terra l’antico paramento restaurato, e al piano primo la memoria dell’antico prospetto reinterpretato con nuova funzione.

I volumi che fanno parte dell’area ristoro, hotel ed uffici, sono arretrati rispetto alla facciata principale della stazione, creando così una regolarità compositiva dove è possibile percepire la gerarchia degli elementi e le relazioni tra essi. Gli edifici sono posti in maniera sfalsata e tendono ad avvolgersi intorno ad un centro, questo rappresentato dalla corte principale interna, che funge da elemento di equilibrio tra le parti volumetriche, centro di gravità.

Con l’arretramento dei volumi dal filo stradale di Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi si crea una piazza verde antistante, luogo di incontro ed accesso al complesso di servizi. Come la corte interna che diventa luogo di aggregazione, dove si può passare il tempo libero a contatto con la natura. Il progetto prevede una presenza di alberi molto forte, alberi come elementi iconici di collegamento con il passato, riprendendo quindi il carattere originario del sito e dell’area della stazione cui era caratterizzata.
