This year, Neri&Hu was appointed as the "Guests of Honour" and installation designer for the 2019 Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair. The installation, called The Unfolding Village, was exhibited from February 5th to the 9th and attracted large crowds of design enthusiasts.

Neri&Hu's design was featured in Dezeen, Wallpaper*, Archdaily, TL mag, and many other publications with great reviews as one of the best installations ever designed by the "Guests of Honour".

For the installation this year, Neri&Hu departed from convention; which normally focuses only on product designs. Neri&Hu’s installation links the objects and products on display to the pressing social issue unique to China.

Neri&Hu is concerned with the Traditional Chinese villages and culture disappearing at an alarming rate. This impacts the notion of community, family, and roots. Many of Neri&Hu’s product designs are centered on the notions of nostalgia, dwelling, home, family, and the individual’s relationship within a collective. Neri&Hu proposed an installation that represents the spirit of the traditional village.

Inspired by the alleyways and street life of clan-based villages, the exhibition layout is a sinuous alleyway that folds & unfolds to create lanes & layers of space revealed slowly to visitors.

The profile & form takes on the reading of an abstracted-pitched roof which represents the home. When repeated and connected the rows form a "village". Neri&Hu products (furniture, lighting, and accessories) are curated and placed within the village which is built with local timber from Sweden.

Screens, built in millwork, windows and shutters create unexpected moments of encounter.

The Chinese notion of "fiction" is actually derived from the term "small talk" originating from the alleys and streets. The spatial device of the alley creates a quirky tableau for the objects while inviting the subversive behaviors of gossip, voyeurism, and eavesdropping amongst fair visitors.
