Casa LT | MAIN OFFICE

The Mexico and Sweden-based architectural practice MAIN OFFICE www.mainoffice.eu has recently expanded and restored CASA LT, an existing residential complex nestled in luxuriant tropical Mexican greenery. Located in Sayulita, a well-known surfers’ town on the West coast of Mexico, the building stands on the beachfront and blends smoothly into the steep and articulated topography, with a breathtaking view over the Pacific Ocean.

Carefully integrating architecture and the tranquil tropical landscape, CASA LT has been designed around the living palm and almond trees, plantains and ferns that join the site’s topography in playing a key role in ensuring a clear view to the waterfront from all its spaces, both internal and external.

Composed of three small houses situated on the top of the hill, the original complex built in the 50’s was in poor condition due to humidity problems and lack of maintenance. MAIN OFFICE initially focused on the renovation and preservation of the original essence, and then on the design of a new main building and a guest house facing the beach on the lower part of the property.

“The main idea of the project is to reinterpret the design parameters of the original complex and to keep the idea of a small-contained village within the site.” says Dante Borgo, MAIN OFFICE’s co-founder.

MAIN OFFICE connects the various levels through a series of concrete platforms that adapts to the topography, walkways and vibrant gardens. The border between interior and exterior dissolves. The single-family house features a kitchen with a panoramic view, an open living and dining area linked to the infinity pool, a bedroom with handcrafted concrete bathtub built in-situ, and a terrace with a stunning ocean view.

Both the construction system and the materials employed have been derived from local resources. Cement blocks finished with white stucco shape the walls, while polished concrete enhances the architectural quality of floors and fixed furniture. For the warm interior furniture, closets, doors and window frames, indigenous Parota wood has been used for its resistance to humidity, to salinity in the air and to exposure to strong sunlight.

Part of a wider research initiative, CASA LT is located a mere few steps away from other buildings designed by MAIN OFFICE, such as CASA GALERIA, a newly built residential complex that has rapidly become a reference point in the town, and the upcoming CASA REAVIS, a private house to be completed by the end of 2018.

La oficina de arquitectura con base en México y en Suecia MAIN OFFICE (www.mainoffice.eu), ha restaurado y expandido recientemente CASA LT, un complejo residencial en la exuberante vegetación tropical mexicana.

Ubicado en Sayulita, un conocido pueblo de surfistas en la costa Oeste de México, el proyecto se desplanta frente a la playa y se va mezclando sutilmente con la topografía irregular hacia la parte superior del terreno para aprovechar las increíbles vistas sobre el Océano Pacífico.

Integrando cuidadosamente la arquitectura con la tranquilidad de la vegetación tropical y selvática, CASA LT ha sido diseñada alrededor de palmas, almendros, monsteras, bananos y demás vegetación tropical existente en el predio, que junto con la accidentada topografía del lugar, aseguran en todo momento vistas francas al Océano desde cualquier espacio, tanto interior como exterior.

Compuesto por 3 casas pequeñas localizadas en la cima de una montaña, el complejo original que fue construido en la década de los 50’s, sufría de un alto grado de deterioro debido a la humedad y a su poco uso, por lo que MAIN OFFICE se enfocó primeramente en la restauración y preservación de las edificaciones existentes, para posteriormente diseñar la nueva vivienda principal de115 m2 y una casa de huéspedes de 50 m2 ubicada frente a la playa en la parte baja de la propiedad.

“El objetivo primordial del proyecto es reinterpretar los parámetros de diseño del complejo original y preservar la idea y la sensación de una pequeña aldea contenida.” dice Dante Borgo, cofundador de MAIN OFFICE.

Es por ello que  MAIN OFFICE conecta los diferentes niveles del proyecto mediante una serie de plataformas de concreto que se adaptan a la topografía, junto con caminamientos y jardines vibrantes, en donde la frontera entre interior y exterior se disuelve. La casa principal cuenta con cocina, una sala abierta hacia el exterior que se mezcla con el área de la alberca panorámica, una recámara que cuenta con una tina de concreto pulido hecha en sitio y una terraza con una vista inigualable hacia el Océano Pacífico.

Tanto los materiales como el sistema constructivo son locales. Bloques de cemento con enjarre para los muros, mientras que los pisos y  los muebles fijos están hechos de cemento pulido para resaltar su calidad arquitectónica. Los muebles interiores, closets y marcos de ventanas  están hechos de Parota, una madera de la región que tiene un alto grado de resistencia a la humedad y  a la constante y directa exposición incidencia solar.

Como parte de una búsqueda más amplia, CASA LT se localiza a pocos metros de CASA GALERIA, un condominio residencial también diseñado por MAIN OFFICE, que rápidamente se ha convertido en un referente de la zona.
