The restoration and extension of the Theatre alla Scala affected a wide triangle of the city.  From the square in front of the historic building the lot extends along Via Filodrammatici on one hand, and along Via Verdi until the former San Paolo bank on the other. The architectural project regarding the extension developed two new volumes surmounting the eaves of the existent neoclassical building: the raising of the stage tower in the shape of a parallelepiped, - with all technical requirements and rehearsal rooms to fit -,  set in the main axis to reinforce the layout of the Piermarini theatre, and next to it, an elliptic volume housing the artists’ dressing room that hovers above the historical buildings. A conservative restoration was provided for the monumental parts of the theatre and its original structure as the Piermarini hall and the nineteenth century annex buildings, whereas the new parts, that are set back from the street front, want to express a contemporary and “abstract” architectural language to contrast with the  “figurative” one of the historical urban landmark.

La ristrutturazione del Teatro alla Scala di Milano ha interessato un ampio triangolo urbano che dalla piazza antistante si estende, da un lato, lungo via dei Filodrammatici e, dall’altro, lungo via Verdi fino all’edificio ex San Paolo. Il progetto di ristrutturazione prevede due nuovi volumi al di sopra del profilo di gronda delle architetture neoclassiche esistenti: l’uno con l’innalzamento della torre scenica che consolida l’asse principale della sala del Piermarini e si presenta come un parallelepipedo le cui dimensioni sono dettate da esigenze tecniche; l’altro con un volume a pianta ellittica che si libra sopra la struttura ottocentesca di via dei Filodrammatici e accoglie al suo interno i camerini. La parte monumentale del teatro fino al livello di gronda, con la sala del Piermarini e i corpi edilizi ottocenteschi a lato, è stata oggetto di restauro “conservativo”, mentre i nuovi volumi della torre scenica e dei camerini, arretrati rispetto al fronte stradale, presentano un linguaggio contemporaneo “astratto” che si contrappone a quello “figurativo” delle strutture preesistenti.
