Union Industries plant | studio quattroassociati
Masserano (Biella), 2009 Masserano (Biella) / Italy
UNION, a leading manufacturer of non-woven fabric, decided to develop a new production building in an area close to the existing plant, in place of some decommissioned sheds.
The new, high-tech production unit is 90 m long and 15m high. It requires a totally aseptic environment, and homogeneous and diffused indirect lighting.
The building the client required had to be efficient, well studied in terms of technological systems and architecturally remarkable.
The building's impressive volume implied it would not be possible to establish a morphological relationship with the surrounding buildings, and led instead to a connection on another scale, with the landscape.
The result is a closed and irregular volume, made of faceted planes with silver surfaces, laying on the ground like a large spacecraft. The glazed ground floor strip promotes the image of a suspended volume that exudes light from some of the polycarbonate facades at night.
The new building is aligned with the state road and bordered by a sloping green that shields the view of the parking lot in front.
The building has a metal load-bearing frame coated with silver corrugated sheeting that reflects natural light and dematerializes the new building volume.
