A new headquarters was the first of four buildings we designed for Armstrong’s corporate campus. Located at the terminus of the main campus drive, the building commands a visibly prominent site. The project’s mission was to create a building to reflect Armstrong’s commitment to design innovation, a flexible work environment and sustainability. An integrated approach to the building envelope design embodies these ideals. A completely adaptable workplace is achieved by locating structural columns outside the building. An all-glass exterior wall floods the interiors with natural light. A combination of exterior sunshades, multiple glass types and interior light shelves control the lighting conditions throughout the day. West facing porches have glass fins to regulate both natural light and ventilation. The building lobby is crisscrossed with bridges, stairs, balconies and lounges that create a confluence of public space, circulation and employee interaction. The project is the first completed building to receive the LEED Platinum rating.
