Mediaset Tower was designed and built to improve the television channel’s signal among Rome, Milan and other regional broadcasting stations. Because of its type and dimension the tower is a symbol for its broadcasting company and it’s also a landmark for the surrounding territory. The project of the tower, by Giancarlo Ragazzi, began on april 20th 1992 and was modified in 1994. The works for its construction began on february 7th 1994 and ended on august 7th 1996. The tower is 100 metres high: 98 of reinforced concrete plus 2 of metallic structure. The main cylindrical structure has a 6 metres diameter for the first 80 metres and a 3 metres diameter for the upper cylinder. The foundations lie 9 metres below the ground. The excavation for the tower foundations required the movement of 6.000 cube metres of terrain. 2.200 cube metres of concrete, 290.000 kilograms of steel for reinforced concrete plus 100.000 for the internal lift walls and for the other structures were used for the making of this tower. The internal lift can reach a height of 64 metres and carries up to 1.000 kilograms. The tower is also provided with a winch on the top of the roof. Seven cantilever platforms fit in the main structure between the height of 60 and 80 metres. The biggest three overhang 5 metres from the structural core. Each main platform has 22 connections for the dish antennas. The tower’s use is not circumscribed to broadcasting services but it includes other public functions like the control of air pollution and a base for public defence’s signallings.
