New residence for university students | Studioversuro. Gianpaolo Versuro

The conditions provided by the client for the realization of this project were categorical: very low budget, but spaces characterized by a charming atmosphere, based on a replicable model and, above all, with reduced costs of maintenance because destined for the students of the near faculty of architecture in Venice.

Therefore, after the recent realizations of rather expensive food-stores in 2016 the Studioversuro accepted the challenge to deal with a micro-project – the floor surface is less than 60 sq.m. – a completely different and low-budget project.

The idea comes from the wish to create a space using subtractive processes of that, that it once was the typical residence “of the seventies” in the heart of the city of Mestre.

The use of white as dominant component and the absence of formal and formalistic (and also expensive) refinements comes from the idea of making the location contemporary without exaggerating in the furniture setting-up or, even worse, in the only exhibition of furniture realized by famous designers (the so called “firme”).

As is often the case, a good project composed by few elements implies a strong planning and a total control of the design phase. Not just this. Almost all of what appears in this realization is recovered material, or rather, recovered from a certain disposal of materials, therefore:

- The use of the installation of a false ceiling with detachable panels made of maple wood, recycled by a precedent project of ours – refer to Elios beauty shop – it also derives from the need not to alter the existing floor and to make all the building installations pass on the ceiling, thereby allowing an easy inspection and maintenance.

- The original floor in big marble slabs comes only smoothed and polished – therefore no demolition waste is produced.

- Many of the furniture components, rigorously white, come from previous realizations and have been readapted through light alterations and using low-cost and durable materials, like the wood in panels “Baubucge 35 mm” usually used for the gyms floors – countertop and living room furnitures.

- The only formal concession, if you can call it that, is the covering of the kitchenette in glassy polychrome mosaic, which will vary based on the change of the university residence, if it is considered its being repeatable.

- The only concession to the budget, instead, are the lights, which all are rigorously fluorescent recessed lights – for maintenance and energy-saving reasons – and freshly supplied by Viabizzuno in Bologna.

A difficult project in terms of very-low cost, but perfectly succeeded and in line with the austerity period imposed by the trend of these years.

Le prescrizioni della committenza per la realizzazione di questo progetto erano categoriche: budget ridottissimo ma spazi con “mood” accattivante, replicabile a modello e soprattutto di ridotti costi di manutenzione in quanto destinato agli studenti della vicina facoltà di architettura di Venezia.

Quindi dopo le recenti realizzazioni di food-store piuttosto dispendiose nel 2016 lo Studioversuro accetta la sfida di confrontarsi con un micro-progetto – sono meno di 60 mq di superficie - totalmente diverso e decisamente a basso costo. 

L’idea parte dalla volontà di creare un ambiente di solo sottrazioni di quello che un tempo era la tipica residenza “anni settanta” nel cuore della città di Mestre. L’utilizzo del bianco come elemento dominante e l’assenza di ricercatezze formali e formalistiche nonché dispendiose anche in termini economici nasce da questo concetto di rendere l’ambiente contemporaneo senza eccedere in allestimenti di componenti di arredo o peggio dell’esposizione di sole “firme”.

Come spesso succede un buon progetto composto da pochi elementi presuppone una forte progettualità ed un controllo totale della fase realizzativa. Non solo. Quasi tutto quello che compare in questa realizzazione è materiale di recupero VERO ovvero recuperato da certo conferimento in discarica e quindi:

- L’utilizzo della controsoffittatura con pannelli amovibili in legno di acero riciclati da un precedente nostro progetto – vedi centro estetico Elios – deriva anche dalla necessità di non alterare il pavimento esistente e far passare tutta la parte impiantistica a soffitto permettendo così una loro facile ispezione e manutenzione.

- Il pavimento originario in lastre di marmo di grandi dimensioni viene solamente levigato e lucidato – quindi nessun rifiuto da demolizione prodotto.

- Molti dei componenti di arredo, rigorosamente bianchi, derivano da precedenti realizzazioni i quali sono stati riadattati tramite lievi alterazioni e utilizzando materiali a basso costo e durevoli quali il legno in pannelli “Baubucge 35 mm” utilizzato normalmente per i pavimenti delle palestre – piano di lavoro cucina e mobile soggiorno.

- Unica concessione formale, se così si può definire, è data dal rivestimento dell’angolo cottura in mosaico vitreo policromo il quale dovrà variare al varare della residenza universitaria considerata la sua replicabilità.

- Unica concessione al budget invece sono i copri illuminati i quali sono tutti rigorosamente ad incasso con luce a fluorescenza - per motivi manutentivi e di risparmio energetico -  e di nuova fornitura Viabizzuno di Bologna.

Un progetto difficile in quanto a bassissimo costo ma perfettamente riuscito e perfettamente in linea periodo di austerità che questi anni impongono.
