Spatial planning of Piazzale Valdo Fusi | Mihaela Surdu

       The main idea of the project is related to the concept of connecting people through art; Europa Cantat Festival was created with the idea of a show that will unite people from different countries, different cultures or different social backgrounds, through music. The atmosphere created is participating in the development of the city, open spaces attract inhabitants and invite them: \"On Stage – Festa – Soul Food\". And you, are you ready to sing? \"

        For the proposal of spatial planning of Piazzale Valdo Fusi , I have chosen circular and fluid shapes that seem to draw the sound propagation of music in spaces created by man. I studied   the rectangular form of the square, the topography(oscillation of level), the routes  created that lead to the center of the area ; I studied the existing buildings and of course the acoustics of the area, which seems to be very good, because the square is surrounded by buildings. At first glance it seems like a huge theater scene waiting to be animated.

       Based on these conclusions, I set up the space proposing 3 scenes: a central scene, a scene adjacent to the jazz club and a main stage for modules that host workshops and other activities. Each scene corresponds terraces supported by metal structures(metal modules).

       The cover of the proposed elements will be made through organic structures (a thin flexible solar shade material) supported by metallic elements; these forms are designed to bring the spirit of the mediterranean squares by imitating nature.(the vegetation is a specific item of mediterranean squares). These coverings creates large translucent shade spaces and presents a heavy bottom surface that supports anchored each cover to the ground.

       Due to its flexibility, you can integrate a array  of photovoltaic cells (on the back of the crown), which will capture the sunlight during the day , releasing light on the night , acting like a light unit. The Festival could integrate and promote the principle of sustainable development, the investment made can be recovered soon. These  shade structures are linked together to create continuity in the visual field(are connected through a continuous ribbon ).

       The cabin located in the center of the square , it can be masked by panels. I used panels-absorbent coverings and delimited areas with scenes, in which will take place simultaneously concerts of different genres. On the opposite side of the jazz club I proposed platforms in shape of musical scale. The urban space is also arranged by rotating panels which creates certain paths. (some with integrated sound absorbing panels to protect from the traffic noise).

       The workshops, courses and exchange of experience will take place in circular modules, with seating places and smaller scenes. The modules create separate spaces for each group of participants at the festival and their teacher, and  at the same time because of the transparent material , they are connected with the environment and events that take place nearby.
